Finally…good shots of a Cackling Goose (Branta hutchinsii) - #1 of 4 shots in the series
Made by rwolfert
While I saw a Cackling Goose for the first time this past New Year's Day (2008, in East Brunswick, NJ), I was not able to get a satisfying look, let alone a good shot of it at the time. (Sort of like getting a tiny nibble of the world's best chocolate. You need more! Yesterday (11/16/2008) I went to Rahway River Park (NJ) to see if I could satisfy my need to get a better look at one. Cackling Geese had been reported there for about a week and it seemed a good bet to see one there. After 30 minutes of scanning a small lake which contained about 200 Canada Geese, and growing just a tad frustrated, I finally spotted one (or perhaps it had just flown in). This time, the distance was quite manageable with my lens set at 400 mm. Despite the temperatures (about 42°) with winds up to 20 mph, I grabbed some really good shots of it. This is the first shot I got of it after I first spotted it. No, it's not a small Canada Goose! They look very much alike but are actually 2 different species. The Cackling Goose is much smaller…perhaps large duck sized, and has a much smaller bill. Also the breast (at least on this one) is not the expected white but is more the color of the flanks and back you would typically see on a Canada Goose. Appearance of Cackling Goose always causes some excitement to birders. Perhaps it's just me, but they seem to be occurring throughout the northeast with increasing frequency over the last several years. On other hand, are we just more aware of them and therefore reporting them more frequently? Perhaps the real answer is a combination of both factors. See the next 3 photos for much more detail that provides great size comparisons with Canada Geese. It's NOT the quality of these photos that's the issue, but the solid comparison they provide between Cackling Goose and Canada Goose. These species are too easily confused leaving Cackling goose to be completely missed. Click below to get to the 2nd photo.

Cackling Goose (right) compared with Canada Geese -- thanks to all those Jersey Birders who posted. Not only got the bird in the short time I had to try for it in the late afternoon, but (unexpectedly) the storm clouds cleared in the west just as we got there, so I was able to get some shots. Can anyone comment on this bird? Bill is very petite, but head shape is quite rounded. although forehead is certainly higher than the Canadas'. Is this just within normal variation for Richardson's (B. h. hutchinsii)? There is a sharp border between neck and pale breast, with the slightest hint of a white neck-ring; the breast is slightly darker than the presumed B. c. canadensis, but nowhere near typical B. h. minima. And have there actually been three Cackling Geese present at this site? More here:.

Swans, genus Cygnus, are birds of the family Anatidae, which also includes geese and ducks. Swans are grouped with the closely related geese in the subfamily Anserinae where they form the tribe Cygnini. Sometimes, they are considered a distinct subfamily,Cygninae . There are six to seven species of swan in the genus Cygnus; in addition there is another species known as a swan, the Coscoroba Swan, although this species is no longer considered related to the true swans. Swans usually mate for life, though 'divorce' does sometimes occur, particularly following nesting failure. The number of eggs in each clutch ranges from three to eight.

Front view comparison - #3 of 4 shots in the series

This shot provides a really good comparison of the size differences from the front. Notice how the Cackling Goose (on the right) is narrower across the beam and sits lower in the water. This is evident even though it is closer to the camera. Click the link below to get to the 4th and last photo of the series.

Drawing me like a moth to a flame, the low sunlight shining through these trees had a quality that I scrambled to capture before the moment passed - as they do so quickly at this time of day... In other words, Dang, that light is sahweet! Screw the tripod, no time, I've gotta handhold this sucker!
