Torre Agbar

Torre Agbar
Made by Dave G Kelly
This reached the number one spot on Flickr Explore/Interestingness 13 October 2006!!! That might explain all the views and favs... Anyway back to the story. I went down to Glories, where this building is located at around 8 o'clock to get a few photos of it illuminated. Unfortunately, when I got down there it was in total darkness. Waited around for about an hour to see if it would be lit up, but no joy. Started to head back to the Metro and voila at 9 bells - result! Here's a bit more about the tower. It really is something to see: The Torre Agbar (Catalan or Spanish, from Aguas de Barcelona, a water company), or Agbar Tower, is a 21st century skyscraper in Barcelona, Catalonia, Spain. It was designed by French architect Jean Nouvel. It opened in June 2005 and it was inaugurated officially by the Kings of Spain on 16 September 2005. The building resembles an enormous missile, but many people see it as a giant dildo or suppository. It has 30 000 m² (323,000 ft²) of above-ground office space, 3210 m² (34,500 ft²) of technical service floors with installations and 8351 m² (90,000 ft²) of services, including an auditorium. The Agbar Tower measures 144.4 meters (466 feet in height) and consists of 38 stories, including 4 underground levels. Its design combines a number of different architectural concepts, resulting in a striking structure built with reinforced concrete, covered with a facade of glass, and over 4,400 window openings cut out of the structural concrete. The building stands out in Barcelona; it is the third tallest building in Barcelona, only after the Arts Hotel and the Mapfre Tower, both 154m. A unique feature of the building is its nocturnal illumination. It has more than 4,000 LED luminous devices that allow generation of luminous images in the facade. In addition, it has temperature sensors in the outside of the tower that regulate the opening and closing of the glass blinds of the facade of the building, reducing the consumption of energy for air conditioning. It will house the head office of the Group Aigües de Barcelona (Spanish: Aguas de Barcelona, English: Barcelona Water Company).

Palau de la Musica Catalana - Barcelona

Palau de la Musica Catalana - Barcelona
Made by ladigue_99
The Palau de la Música Catalana (Palace of Catalan Music) is a concert hall designed in the Catalan modernisme style by the architect Lluís Domènech i Montaner. It was built in Barcelona, Catalonia, Spain, between 1905 and 1908 for the Orfeó Català, a choral society founded in 1891 that was a leading force in the Catalan cultural and political independence movement that came to be known as the Renaixença (Catalan Rebirth) (Benton 1986, 56; Fahr-Becker 2004, 199). it was inaugurated February 9 1908. The project was financed primarily by the society, but important financial contributions also were made by Barcelona's wealthy industrialists and bourgeoisie. The Palau won the architect an award from the Barcelona City Council in 1909, given to the best building built during the previous year. Between 1982 and 1989, the building underwent extensive restoration, remodeling, and extension under the direction of architects Oscar Tusquets and Carles Díaz (Carandell et al. 2006, 138). In 1997, the Palau de la Música Catalana was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site along with Hospital de Sant Pau. Today, more than half a million people a year attend musical performances in the Palau that range from symphonic and chamber music to jazz and Cançó (Catalan song). from: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Palau_de_la_M%c3%basica_Catalana

Museum of Contemporary Art (MACBA), Barcelona. (See my set.) The Barcelona Museum of Contemporary Art (MACBA) is situated in the Plaça dels Àngels, in El Raval, Ciutat Vella, Barcelona. It was designed by Richard Meier & Partners (1987-1995). This large (120 by 35 meters) white building has much of its southern elevation glazed, providing the visitor with views across the plaza, and allowing natural light into the interior. The museum opened to the public on 28 November 1995. All the art dates back from the late 20th century onward. There are three periods of modern art represented: the first one covers the forties to the sixties; the second spans the sixties and seventies; the third period is contemporary. The collections focus on post-1945 Catalan and Spanish art. (Adapted from: Wikipedia) Explore #402 (November 22, 2007). My 10th Explore! Thanks! =)

Oh, go on then, here's a couple more Barcelona photos as you all seemed to like yesterdays Forum upload so much. This is a semi abstract composition of one of my favourite Barcelona buildings by one of my favourite Architects. MACBA, by Richard Meier, is tucked away in the Raval and is partly credited for the regeneration of a formerly run-down area of Barcelona. From Wikipedia : The Barcelona Museum of Contemporary Art (Museu d'Art Contemporani de Barcelona, or MACBA) is situated in the Plaça dels Àngels, in El Raval, Ciutat Vella, Barcelona, Spain. It was designed by Richard Meier & Partners (1987-1995). The building’s architectural style has strong references to Modernism. This large (120 by 35 meters) white building has much of its southern elevation glazed, providing the visitor with views across the plaza, and allowing natural light into the interior. It includes a central library, specialized in art books and publications.

España. - L'estel ferit, es una obra de la artista alemana Rebecca Horn ubicada en la playa de la Barceloneta. La escultura es una torre de acero conformada por cuatro cubos apilados de manera desencajada que representarían cuatro habitaciones modulares. This shot of Richard Meiers MACBA in Barcelona seems to be quite random and abstract but it is created from a very rational floor plan. The Sanctum of Santa María del Mar Cathedral

The Sanctum of Santa María del Mar Cathedral
Made by Stuck in Customs
Here is another amazing place in Barcelona, Spain -- this is the famed Santa María del Mar Cathedral. I do like taking photos in these old churches, and I hope one day to photograph the inside of the Sagrada Família. It's still under construction, and I think getting the right kind of permission is fairly difficult. I'd like to be there at the perfect time of day with just the right kind of lighting. I don't mind all the construction going on -- I think something pretty amazing could come out of the shot. Anyway, this is one of those things on my personal photo bucket-list! from the blog www.stuckincustoms.com

Wille Melon

Barcelona 2006. Wille Mäkelä did awesome melon airs out of these obscure waves, and I was there to take the photo. Shot with my trusty Hasselblad 2000FC, 150mm lens, on Kodak Ektachrome. I had two Nikon SB-28s on the left (1/2 power) and two Sunpak 120J's just outside the frame on the right (1/4 power). 1/500 and f/5.6½, the late afternoon sun was still scorching. My favourite thing in the photo are the small star shapes in the waterdrops, I'm guessing they're created by the leaf shutter. Featured in an Etnies ad, Hang Up 4/2007 - the bastards cropped that P3 ball out of the picture.

La Catedral del Mar El libro que lleva ese título, de Ildefonso Falcones, es una bonita y amena novela histórica en que la construcción de esta obra casi única del gótico (S XIV), se entremezcla con la del protagonista, Arnau. Me gustó mucho. The Cathedral of the Sea A novel by Ildefonso Falcones, where the story of the construction of this unique gothic church goes in parallel and interrelated to the life of Arnau, the main character. I liked it very much. #351 Explore 2007 06 05
