Do game designers dream of electric horses?

Fumito Ueda and Shadow of the Colossus. He and his producer came to Art Futura 2005 only two or three weeks after delivering the gold master for Shadow of the Colossus. I have already played the first two Collossi. It works exactly as advertised: instead of having a game with a series of stages that include a Boss fight at the end, Colossus is a series of boss fights, with ICO mechanics for the climbing of the giants, Zelda-esque riding and arrow-shooting and art direction to die for. It is in many respects ICO turned inside out, and it plays like what all sequels should play like: it is not a twin brother of the earlier game, but more like a distant cousin who went to college in a different city.

Videogame consoles as an archive medium for electronic art

Elektroplankton took Iwai three months to complete as a software project; it was later ported to the DS by Nintendo's engineers. This short time was possible because Iwai had a huge archive of ideas and code, in fact Elektroplankton is a retrospective exhibition in the form of a multiple edition. For the price of a console and a videogame you can take home Iwai's Opera Omnia, or almost. And the console also plays games. Three months. Compare that to four years for Tenori-on.

I love how low-techy and tactile it all is. Leonardo da Vinci must be asking to please come back to life so he can meet Theo Jansen.
