1202 W US Hwy 24, Independence, Missouri, Official MISSOURI haircut, August 24, 2007 I did my official Missouri haircut during a long weekend to Kansas City. I went there to see the Truman Presidential Library and Museum, the Negro Leagues Baseball Museum, and a Kansas City Royals game (among other things). Doug’s Barber Shop is on US 24, just down the street from the Truman Library. Doug’s is a three-chair shop, with six customer waiting chairs. Both Doug Fields and his partner Esther were working. The barber shop is painted yellow on the top and dark paneling on the bottom. There was a deer head mounted on the wall, as well as a set of antlers and two geese. Doug’s knife collection hung on a back wall and paintings of Native Americans were on the wall opposite the mirrors. Doug, who has been a barber for 44 years, told me stories about meeting President Truman (although he never cut his hair, only his nephew’s) and attending his visitation. He asked me the standard barber interview questions about myself and we also talked about NASCAR tracks and the presence of migrant farm workers in North Carolina. I enjoyed the overall experience, particularly when he asked me to weigh in on another conversation about whether any fights occur at the annual Santacaligon Days Festival, held on Labor Day weekend in Independence. While I had not, it was good to be involved in someone else’s conversation. The haircut cost $12, and was just the way I like it.
