I'm sort of an idiot at times when it comes to music festivals. Since I didn't know the bands that were playing before Mucca Pazza, I barely managed to show up during Mucca Pazza. And while Dan Deacon was an assault to all things good and holy about music in my opinion (and I love electronica and indie dance but not the noises he was making), I should have at least checked out the descriptions of the bands of the day to realize that knowing the bands wasn't really important. The second day of the Hideout Block Party all the way through The Frames was a collection of musical oddities that I'm not sure many festivals will ever match again. I can't believe I missed a rock square dance band and a guitar orchestra because I didn't read the description. But I did catch a little of the Blue Ribbon Glee Club who were - surprise, surprise - a rock glee club performing covers of popular and not so popular rock songs in glee club fashion. Their cover of Where Is My Mind by The Pixies was so rocktastic that The Frames invited the girl half of the band on stage with them when they did their own cover of The Pixies song. Who knows if that was planned or not. It was that sort of day. It was a tribute to the directions that rock music can go when broken free of its boundaries. I'm not sure the first song of the set was a cover or not, but this is the soloist on I Just Want To Rock Out (I think that was what the song was called as it was said over and over like a mantra).

I went a bit crazy with the photography on the second day of the Hideout Block Party. Where on the first day I only came out with about a dozen photos, on the second day, I have about 40 photos that I think are usable. I will eventually post a lot of these between the two accounts. But for now going into the week, I just want to get my favorite photos of the four remaining bands that I photographed at the festival up. This is my favorite photo that I took of Art Brut. It's bassist Freddy Feedback and drummer Mikey Breyer toward the end of the set. The Art Brut set was the highlight of my weekend as it was just cathartic and they are just one of the best live bands going right now, period. I think this is just my favorite because it's the best picture I got of Freddy who is just the cutest thing ever where female bassists go. Well besides Laura Ballard of Superchunk. Of course Eddie Argos is the main attraction so there will be photos of him to follow.

It's unfortunate that due to where I was standing, all of my The Frames photos are of lead singer Glen Hansard. It's not as though I was standing right in front of him or anything. I was actually standing about as extreme stage left as could be while still being able to see the middle of the stage. This one is as close to other members of the band as came out. And these aren't even members of the band. Glen invited a female from the audience to sing the Mar part of Falling Slowly. The first girl he invited up is the one of the right. After she got up on stage, she admitted she didn't know all the words (and seemed to keep whispering to him how much she loved him). Not entirely sounding frustrated, Glen put out another invitation to the audience where the girl in the middle who actually knew the lyrics was invited up. She did have a pretty good voice. Glen did beg that whoever came up on the stage be able to sing.

This is one of those situations where I almost feel like I'm taking photos for two. Kim has a very good blog in which she has already requested permission to post my photos. Since her favorite band out of both days is Mucca Pazza (they were at one point in her top friends on myspace), I figured I'd close the first batch of photos with this photo for her to post. When I first saw the stage that Mucca Pazza would be playing, I honestly wondered how the band (which almost has too many members to count) was going to fit. It turns out they fit by the skin of their teeth (you couldn't see the bass drum through the sea of members) but this couldn't have been comfortable. Therefore, it almost made sense for a couple of members of the band to climb up on the rafters. Not like they wouldn't have done it anyway though.

Truth be told, this is the only photo that I took at the Hideout Block Party that I'm positively in love with. While I hate red concert lighting (and what it does to concert photography for all but the best photographers - which I am not) with a passion reserved for very few things in life, there's one thing I know. Blue light is beautiful. Bloc Party even has a beautiful song called Blue Light that they shoud dedicate to concert photography like Editors should dedicate Camera. Glen Hansard of The Frames just has a glow about him to begin with and bathed in blue light, I think he takes on a life all of his own. He's truly a gift to music. I completed the crossword puzzle in today's Red Eye which is the excuse for the big word in the title of this photo (it was one of the answers). While there's no such thing really as a clean shot of the 26 member Mucca Pazza this is a group shot that I think sums up the band quite nicely. They all play in unison but there's so much going on during a set that this captures the chaos pretty well. I've never really understood the whole musical collective thing but it just seems to work. And, yes, for those people who actually have large vocabularies (I didn't even know the word until I solved a lot of the clues around it), I know it's not actually 1/10th of the band. It just feels like it.

My vantage point of Bloc Party was really far back. Therefore the photos I got of the stage were pretty head heavy (despite my zoom). This one, however, was actually made a little better by having a case of head blockage because it made it really minimal and somewhat interesting looking when it came to the lighting. That and it's the most emotive photo that I got of Bloc Party lead singer Kele Okereke. The band itself was lacking a little something (compared to when I saw them in 2005) but maybe it was just that I was further away.
