Rovinj GENERAL INFORMATION Rovinj (in Italian: Rovigno) is located on the western coast of Istria in Croatia. Istria is the biggest Adriatic peninsula . The climate is mediterranean, the average temperature in January is 4.8 C, wheras the average in July is 22.3 C. Rovinj has around 15.000 inhabitants, and most of them are largely engaged in tourism, in the fishing trade, in agriculture, wine business and in wineculture. The town has a rich history, as well as interesting architectural buildings, beautiful natural resources and industrious people who are certainly worth a visit. Rovinj is also one of the most famous tourist centers in Istria and Croatia, that is attended by many foreign and domestic guests. The accomodation capacities are diverse, reaching from campsites and private apartments and rooms to smaller board and lodging places and high class hotels. It is hard to say with 100% certainity in which period Rovinj developed. For the first time it is mentioned in a work named «Cosmographia» by an anonimous inhabitant of Ravenna, who wrote about «Castrum Rubini» from the 5th century. It is very likely that Rovinj is much older, emerging somewhere at the turn of the 3rd and the 4th centuries. St Euphemias, Rovinj

Euphemia lived in the 3rd century AD and was the daughter of a senator named Philophronos and his wife Theodosia in Chalcedon, located across the Bosporus from the city of Byzantium (which later became Constantinople, modern-day Istanbul). From her youth she was consecrated to virginity. The governor of Chalcedon, Priscus, had made a decree that all of the inhabitants of the city take part in sacrifices to the pagan deity Ares. Euphemia was discovered with other Christians who were hiding in a house and worshiping the Christian God, in defiance of the governor's orders. Because of their refusal to sacrifice, they were tortured for a number of days, and then handed over to the Emperor for further torture. Euphemia, the youngest among them, was separated from her companions and subjected to particularly harsh torments, including the wheel, in hopes of breaking her spirit. It is believed that she died of wounds from a wild bear in the arena under Emperor Diocletian. Eventually, a cathedral was built in Chalcedon over her grave.
