Sukhbaatar sq.

Ulaanbaatar city, Mongolia, May 03, 2007 This square, the has particular historical significance, because it was here, in 1924, that Sukhbaatar stood and proclaimed the victory of the Revolution for Independence, marking finally the overthrough of Mongolia's external and internal enemies. The monument to Sukhbaatar, therefore occupies pride of place in the center of the Square, and all major festivals and events have taken place here since that date. In 1924, a year after the premature death of Sukhbaatar by pneumonia the first National Congress adopted the first Constitutional liquidated the monarchy, proclaimed Mongolia as a republic and the square renamed as Sukhbaatar Square. This date marks the birth of Modern Mongolia and a new era in the history of its people. The words he apparently proclaimed at the time are engraved on the bottom of the statue: 'If we, the whole people, unite in our common effort and common will, there will be nothing in the world that we cannot achieve, that we will not have learnt or failed to do.' _________________ In the background, the mountain name is BOGD KHAN MOUNTAIN: This mountain is the world's oldest official protected area. In 1778, the Emperor of Manchur passed resolutions to formalize the sacred values of the Bogd Khan Mountain and provide for official protection of the site. On the south side of the protected area, monks have begun the process of rebuilding the Monastery Manzushiry. Established in 1750, the monastery housed more than 350 monks and 20 temples, including schools of medicine, astrology, and philosophy, before it was destroyed in the 1930's. Numerous archaeological sites have been discovered in the preserve, including cave paintings that archaeologists date to three thousand years ago. Gandan Monastery, Ulaanbaatar, Mongolia [Jan 2007] The Gandantegchinlen Khiid Monastery, formerly known as Gandan Monastery, is a Tibetan-style monastery in the Mongolian capital of Ulaanbaatar that has been restored and revitalized since 1990. The Tibetan name translates to the Great Place of Complete Joy. It currently has over 400 monks in residence. It features a 26.5-meter-high statue of Migjid Janraisig, a Buddhist bodhisattva also known as Avalokitesvara. It came under state protection in 1994. The monastery was established in 1835 by the Fifth Jebtsundamba, then Mongolia's highest reincarnated lama. It would become the principal center of Buddhist learning in Mongolia. In the 1930s, the Communist government of Mongolia, under the leadership of Horloogiyn Choybalsan and under strong pressure from Joseph Stalin, destroyed over 700 Mongolian monasteries and massacred over 10,000 Buddhist monks. However, the Gandantegchinlen Khiid monastery escaped this destruction. It was closed in 1938 but reopened in 1944 and allowed to continue as a functioning Buddhist monastery, under a skeleton staff and named Gandan (or Ganden) Monastery, as a token homage to traditional Mongolian culture and religion. With the end of communism in Mongolia in 1990, restrictions on worship were lifted. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gandantegchinlen_Khiid_Monastery Blue: A natural color, from the blue of the sky, blue is a universal color. The cool, calming effect of blue makes time pass more quickly and it can help you sleep. A Guard Dog.
Made by mngl
Female dogs tend to make better personal guardians than males, due to their natural instinct to protect their young. However, males are better for guarding property because they are more territorial than females. /quote from wikipedia/ color correction, brightness edited on Lightroom. added a frame on Photoshop. Graffiti, Ulaan Baatar, Mongolia
Made by chrisonadventures
Mongolia's capital is a crazy mix of old and new. Its not unusual to see folks in traditional Mongolian clothing walking past shops full of designer clothes and computers. This graffiti is an example of modern UB, and I'd dearly love to catch a traditionally dressed Mongolian in the foreground. It really is like that.

I want to say I’m sorry – but I also want to be forgiven.

out for a stroll
Made by ectomorfo
A couple of Mongolian women from the older generation out for a stroll in central Ulaanbaatar. Note the 4x4 in the background - nowhere in the world had I seen more top-of-the-range 4x4s, including numerous Hummers, than I did in Ulaanbaatar, something which staggered me initially.
