St. Katherine's Church in Cherniv, Ukraine
Made by Ken and Nyetta
There is a common misperception that only Western Ukraine is Ukrainian and that Eastern Ukrainian is Russian. Chernihiv -- along with Poltava and a number of other ancient cities -- are very, very Ukrainian and firmly planted to the east of the Dnipr River. St. Katherine’s was completed in 1715 to commemorate the storming of the Turks at Azov by Ukrainian Kozaks. When we visited in 2001, it was a museum of decorative arts. It is located just an hour or so north of Kyiv in Chernihiv, one of the oldest cities in Ukraine .
