View the curves large and dark. The much photographed Florin Court in Charterhouse Square - famed by many for being used as the film location for Poirot's Whitehaven Mansions. There were no short moustachioed Frenchmen with me when I took this but I did have with me who pointed out the rather delicious curves. Funnily enough I'd read about Florin Court but never previously took the time to go and see it in the flesh. Charterhouse Square, aside from being more a pentagon than a square, has a rather morbid past having been used as a plague pit during the14th century outbreak of the Black Death - the largest infact and at the time would have been located outside the city walls. It's estimated that there tens of thousands of bodies here which is likely considering the plague wiped out half the city's population. Roll forward a good 600 years and Art Deco was in vogue, particularly the streamlined fashion epitomised by Owen Williams's Daily Express Building of 1930-3 - think rounded corners and continuous bands of windows. Florin Court was originally designed to be a ten story block of businessman's flats. By Guy Morgan and completed in 1936 it had all the luxuries of the time including a cocktail bar, dining room and squash courts. A refurbishment was carried out in the 1980's and a swimming pool was added in the basement. Unfortunately the original Art Deco foyer was tiled over... I don't know if this is a good or bad thing having not seen what it looked like beforehand but I'd like to think that one day it will be restored to the original. The angle here certainly reflects the curvy nature of the building - shots from a distance are equally as impressive as the block is quite a contrast to it's neighbours due to it's size and colour. If you're in the area I can recommend a visit - the square may well yet yield more shots for me. In the meantime I'll leave you with the curves to.. ... enjoy

Just the ticket Large and Dark A shot for Guess Where London - I'm really not sure if this will go quickly or not... we'll see! There's something about the tone and quality of the streetlighting around London which brings out the best in street scenes and I always look forward to the winter mornings which seem to enhance this all the more. This seems to do the trick for plants too, as can be seen on the weed lurking behind the fence on the right here. As for the title...the taste of the New Year is still fresh and here's hoping for an improvement on 2009 - as long-term followers of my photostream may recall, last year wasn't in my top ten what with Julie (Mrs APS) being in hospital for 6 weeks and suchlike. So I'll leave you with memories of the dulcet tones of Morrissey and this shot to... ..enjoy Good times for a change See, the luck I've had Can make a good man turn bad So please, please, please Let me, let me, let me Let me get what I want This time Haven't had a dream in a long time See the life I've had Can make a good man bad So for once in my life Let me get what I want Lord knows, it would be the first time

Viburnum Prunifolium: Charterhouse

Viburnum Prunifolium: Charterhouse
Made by curry15
A clustor of white flowers in the front garden of Charterhouse. Wouldn't you think that with the aid of 'The RHS Plants & Flowers Encyclopedia' and Google that I find out the name? There's an image on flickr and it's called popcorn ball and I refuse to call it that. GOT IT, this is how a waste hours of my day when other things need to be done. Viburnum Prunifolium - Blackhaw Viburnum Prunifolium, or more commonly know as Blackhaw, is a tree shrub with green foliage and white flowers of the genus Viburnum. Phone Box Crowns - (K2) Tudor Crown

Phone Box Crowns - (K2) Tudor Crown
Made by Michael in south London
Location: Charterhouse Square, EC1 The K2 (kiosk 2) was the original version of the iconic red phone box by Giles Gilbert Scott. Designed to be acceptable to the London boroughs, who had resisted the concrete K1, it was produced between 1926 and 1935. As with the more familiar K6 that succeeded it - a cheaper and slightly smaller variant that made it possible to install them throughout the country - it features a Tudor Crown above the doors and windows. This crown being the emblem used by the royal family at that time. But rather than being a cast feature, on the K2 boxes it was instead cut into the cast iron shell. Although the shape of the crown is painted gold here, usually they are left plain, with the holes making it appear like a black design on the red kiosk. More phone box crowns: Crown of Scotland (1955-1968) Hopefully more will be added soon.

Known to fans of Agatha Christie's Poirot as Whitehaven Mansions, the home of the TV detective. This building is actually very close to the Barbican in the heart of east-central London. Behind the hedge on the far side of this garden (which is private and gated!) are many parked cars which completely spoil the look of the street. From here one can hardly see them, but shooting over the hedge this side is not easy! Funny thing is that when you see this building in the Poirot programmes, there is no hedge in front of it, but this hedge does not look new! Now how did they do that?

Promoting holidays in his castle

Promoting holidays in his castle
Made by 'LPG'
This man has a castle in Bled, Slovenija, Eastern Europe, and was in London promoting it. The castle is located on top of a rock overlooking a lake. It is mentioned for the first time in 1011 when it was giving by the German Emperor Henrik II to the bisshop of Brixem (so I assume it is even older). They have a small museum and a restaurant.

River Thames

View from a boat to both sides of the Thames. What I like about London that the city is living: each month you can take pictures of an area and new buildings appeared, old ones are changed/removed, it is never boring. Two images, one for the sky and one for the forground combined to for one picture.

I know, I recently added a panorama of the area of Tower Bridge, but that was in completely darkness. Here there was still some light in the sky, resulting in a much better picture (I find at least). Details: four pictures were taken with ISO 200, Auto WB, f/25 and 13sec.

Sculpture

Sculpture

I like the blue background. When the sky is grey, it is a sculpture to ignore in my opinion (you might even not notice it). She looks in the wrong direction (away from the square towards a wall) and all other sculptures are dark (although I can live with that)
