Second picture of Maria Jose, from . This has been a hard week. My Macbook's HD failed, and I was at risk of losing all my recent photography work. I usually backup my personal files every month or so, but I've been lazy since march. Things from my real work (I work on academic research on applied econometrics...) and school (... while I finish my MSc. Degree on Economics) where not at risk as I hold everything on a drop-box account; but I was really worried about everything else, photos in particular. I was lucky, as my local apple technician managed to transfer everything to a brand new HHD before the other one broke down completely. Thanks to him I post this picture here today :) Back to this photo, It was made with my usual portrait setup: one Vivitar 285HV strobe at 1/4 power shooting through a soft panel. For me, this is the best one of the set, not because of the technicals, but just because she looks absolutely breathtaking. Comment Please :) edit: Up to #8 on my interestingness rating 24 hours after the upload, as you can see here

Marjorie Simpson (née Bouvier)

Marjorie Simpson (née Bouvier)
Made by moralec
According to Wikipedia: Matt Groening first conceived Marge and the rest of the Simpson family in 1986 in the lobby of producer James L. Brooks' office. Groening had been called to pitch a series of animated shorts for The Tracey Ullman Show, and had intended to present an adaptation of his Life in Hell comic strip. When he realized that animating Life in Hell would require him to rescind publication rights, Groening decided to go in another direction and hurriedly sketched out his version of a dysfunctional family, naming the characters after members of his own family. Marge was named after Groening's mother Margaret Marge Groening, who has said she bears little similarity to the character, stating, It's really weird to have people think you're a cartoon. Marge's beehive hairstyle was inspired by The Bride of Frankenstein and the style that Margaret Groening wore during the 1960s, although her hair was never blue. Strobist: Vivitar Strobe inside a DIY Lighbox. Subject on top of a glass surface sprayed with aerosol paint to get the reflection. More info in .

Paula 1 (Rock Star)

Paula 1 (Rock Star)

New Photoshoot! New Model! This is Paula, another friend from my uni. We have know each other for several years, but become particularly close just recently. Last I got the chance of taking some portraits of her from the first time, and I have to admit I was blown away with the results. This particular picture is one of the highlights of the day. We went for a rock-star look using my old electric guitar as a prop, and my Vivitar 285HV Strobe bounced on my (now usual) DIY silver umbrella as the main light source. This lighting setup gave me the chance to obtain really good contrast and nice reflections both on her and on the guitar. Finally, I applied a custom B&W conversion + some vignetting on post, to gave the whole picture a more dramatic edge. Strobist: Off camera strobe at 1/2 power bounced on a silver umbrella located on camera right. Comment please :)

Second picture of Meme, from . Same setup as my previous picture, with my strobe bouncing at a DIY Umbrella as the main light source. Also a short strobe-to-subject distance to get a good fallout. I'm really happy with this particular picture. I really liked this dress from the moment I saw it, but the end result is way better than I ever anticipated. Besides making her look lovely, its texture really makes the shot interesting. Its amazing how, after you remove the colors, other elements from the shot pop out. Strobist: Off camera Vivitar 285HV Strobe at 1/2 power, bounced on a silver umbrella located around 2 meters out of frame on camera right, in front of the subject. Comment please :)

Second picture from . Same chair, same Maria Jose, but different outfit and pose. I really like the overall look of this picture. I think the magic comes from the contrast between the white background, chair and shorts, and the color of her shirt and socks! Strobist: Vivitar 285HV strobe at 1/4 power shooting through a soft panel (1mX1m), placed at camera right. (check out this picture of the panel on location). The strobe was of course, off camera, triggered wirelessly using Cowboy Studio's transmitter-and-receiver bundle. Editing: Apple's Aperture to soften her skin a bit. BorderFX for the frame. Comment Please :)

Roof and Los Andes Mountains (or HDR made in the ceiling)

Roof and Los Andes Mountains (or HDR made in the ceiling)
Made by moralec
Some weeks ago (as I described ), I went up the roof of my building to take some HDR pictures. I really liked this perspective, as there is a clear constrast between the rooftop and bricks (very urban), the green mountain, and the sky. That day I was not really satisfied with the results when I merged the original photos into HDR; but yesterday I decided to start from the original pictures again, and gave the whole tonemapping process another try. I think the result is way better than before. I'm really getting to like Black and White HDR landscape pictures; specially in those cases when I can get the chance to gain a lot of contrast, making clouds brighter, and the sky darker. Hope you guys like this! Comment Please :)

Today (Jan 2nd, 2010) I had a photo-shoot to welcome the new year. The model was my friend Angela, and this is my first pick. She wanted something really natural, getting the studio felling out of the equation. Because of this, I went for natural light for every picture, and took most of them outdoors (some I did shot indoors, but used window light to get a natural look). I really like the overall look of this one; the pose is nice and the small depth of field softens the tones of the background, making her pop out. Also as the outfit is plain, it don't takes the all attention of the viewer I'll upload some more from her during the following week. Comment please :)

I think this is the best shot from Angelas' Jan 2nd session. I wanted some with a white background, so after we where outside we moved indoors. I found this perfect wall, with a lot of natural lighting coming from a huge window in the right, in the laundry room. I think the whole environment makes the photo really easy-going, and natural: exactly what she wanted. Also the pose is great, as one can see her hole body, but in a tight frame. I had to use a soft flash as a fill, as the light was only coming from one side. This was not the best call as a small shadow appeared in the back. I'll use a reflector next time. Comment please :)

Third portrait from June 13th, this time of my lovely girlfriend Paulis. This is my favorite shot of that day. I think the overall look is great: her body fading in the background makes her face pop up, her makeup looks nice and clean and the brightness of her hair and the details on her eyes (specially the nice reflection coming from the light) make the picture interesting. Strobist: Single Vivitar 285HV Strobe at 1/4 power behind a DIY soft panel placed on camera left and a above the model. Black Fabric in the background. Comment please :)

Had a fast photoshoot 2 days ago (On Feb 3) with my friend Norma as a model. We are both really busy right now, but decided to take some time anyway to execute some ideas we had on hold for several weeks. This is by far the best shot I got, and I think is one of the best I have taken so far (hope you visitors will feel the same; I'm expecting lot of activity here). It was inspired mainly by . I think the framing, lighting and composition are nice; and I'm specially happy with the light on the bottom left side, that gives an interesting reflection on the wall, and nice shadows on her. Comments (and faves) please! :)

Remember that photoshoot from ?. Well I still have some great pictures of Samsara to be shared, so I'll be posting them here on flickr from time to time. This particular one was made using only natural lighting, with a window in the background and adjusting the exposure to get a high key effect. What do you think? Comment Please :) edit: Just 24 hours after the upload this has gone up to #16 on my interestingness rating, as can be seen here Thanks to all! edit: after 3 days, up to #13. edit: Up to #9 on june 1st.

New model, new photoshoot and a lot of new pictures. More details soon.... According to wikipedia, Samsara is the cycle of birth, death and rebirth (i.e. reincarnation) within Buddhism, Bön, Hinduism, Jainism, Sikhism, Vaishnavism and other Indian religions. Colloquially, Samsara can also refer to a general state of overt or subtle sufferings that occur in day to day life. Comment please :) edit: See from this photoshoot. edit 2: Up to #3 on my interestingness rating on Apr 1st 2010, as you can see here

Another one from . Very simple picture: pink vibrating background with a soft light, and Maria Jose wearing a black dress to get some contrast. Strobist: Vivitar 285HV strobe at 1/4 power shooting through a soft panel (1mX1m), placed at camera right. The strobe was of course, off camera, triggered wirelessly using Cowboy Studio's transmitter-and-receiver bundle. Editing: Apple's Aperture to soften her skin a bit. And then BorderFX to frame it. Comment Please :)

Fifth picture of samsi. This was done using only natural light coming from a window on the right side. The softness of the light is nice, and the exposure is also great as we took this early in the afternoon. As it got late it was harder and harder to get enough light at low ISO speeds, so I was forced it turn that dial up. That's why the rest of the pictures have more visible grain :) Comment please :) If this is the first picture you see of Samsara, don't leave without visiting some other picks from this .

Cata 3

Cata 3

Third picture of Cata from . Some location as the previous one, but different outfilt. This time I went for a very natural white on white portrait. I used a very slow shutter speed on the camera to get the most light from the window; as a result the shot is not as sharp as I would like it to be. Strobist: Natural light from the window in the back as the main light source, and a off camera Vivitar 285HV Strobe at 1/2 power bounced on the ceiling acting as a fill. Comment please :)

New Photoshoot! New Model! This is Ana Lucia. We got together on to make a set inspired in Pin-Up Aesthetic. I really think we nailed with this set, and I have to admit that Ana's look was just perfect for it. In this picture I used and off camera Vivitar 285HV Strobe at 1/2 power behind a soft panel, located just out of frame on the left. I'll upload more pictures from this set in days to come. Comment please :)
