view this in large or original size please this series of four shots features the square tower at cliff palace at mesa verde national park in southwestern colorado this shot is one of my favorites--it's hard to translate scale sometimes in photographs--and especially to the one viewing the photograph who hasn't also been to the site. this shot gives some of the scale and the massive weight and formidable presence of the overhang itself (please view in large or original size). a few of the windows have the iconic keyhole style opening, which was explained as having some possible spiritual connection for the residents. it is, though, unknown, as the original pueblo inhabitants left no written record of their history or presence. some artifacts, woven baskets and pottery shards, analyzed coprolite and the buildings themselves have left clues from which generalities can be deduced. but the fact is that little is known of the anasazi, nor why they abruptly vanished. for those of you with google earth earth.google.com/ can view the site with more detail from above. also, in google earth, tilt the view and then look southward down the valley that eventually empties out into the colorado river watershed--probably from which the original inhabitants came, and perhaps also from whence came their doom a really good book, a mystery, and one of my favorite authors is Ill Wind by Nevada Barr. the story is set here at Mesa Verde. The protagonist is Anna Pigeon, a law enforcement officer for the National Park Service.

My stepfather is the headmaster of a school and at the last minute, I joined his school's 8th grade trip to Cortez, Colorado and the Crow Canyon Archaelogical Center.
