it's hot in greece. two minutes after this was taken i straight-up crotched those pants, which i loved, by putting my leg up on a rock to pose for another photo. i had foolishly put them through the hostel laundry back in beijing. i did not know then that the chinese wash their clothes by drenching them in hydrochloric acid mixed with llama urine (a powerful pants solvent) until they are deemed clean, dried in a ceramic pottery kiln oven at one thousand degrees celsuis or fahrenheit (doesn't matter) and returned to their unsuspecting owner, who then typically takes them to greece, rips the crotch out on top of the acropolis and then wears them around europe for another two weeks due to a lack of other available pants, despite . perhaps at times he tries to hold his pants butt on with safety pins, which then (predictably, some would say, but at random intervals) unfasten themselves and stab him in the perineum. eventually he buys new pants, in france. and goes to see england. Acropolis

Acropolis

Athens is the historical capital of Europe, with a long history, dating from the first settlement in the Neolithic age. In the 5th Century BC (the “Golden Age of Pericles”) – the culmination of Athens’ long, fascinating history – the city’s values and civilization acquired a universal significance. Over the years, a multitude of conquerors occupied Athens, and erected unique, splendid monuments - a rare historical palimpsest. In 1834, it became the capital of the modern Greek state and in two centuries since it has become an attractive modern metropolis with unrivalled charm. -- www.visitgreece.gr

Athena's Olive Tree, Erechtheion, Acropolis

Athena's Olive Tree, Erechtheion, Acropolis
Made by kaitlin.marie
According to Greek mythology, this is the olive tree given to the city of Athens during a contest between Athena and Poseidon as to who would be the patron of the city of Athens. Poseidon gave the city a well by setting his trident into the floor of one of the North Porch of the Erechtheion - legend says that you can still see the trident marks - but his well, according to the people of Athens, could dry up. Athena's gift of the olive tree was more appreciated and therefore she became the patron Goddess of the city.

Terracotta relief plaque

Terracotta relief plaque
Made by cams_psu
Probably serving a dedicatory or funerary function, terracotta relief plaques were an important art form in ancient Greece. Athena, as seen here, is the most common representation on these plaques, and this one survives nicely, as see by the reconstruction on the right. Note the holes at the top, used for hanging in buildings and temples. C. 500-480 BCE.

One of the most boring views and least inspiring cities I've visited. So much potential and yet look at that sprawling mass. If you view it large, try playing the Find An Interesting Building game. I doubt you'll win. Still, how boring it is has its appeal when its so dense and viewed from above. Athens, Greece.

From my 2007 trip to Greece. This is at the subway station in Athens, Greece. During excavation of the station, many ancient archaeological artifacts were found, so they turned the station in a museum and left recessed all the artifacts into the walls.

2 Agosto 2008 14.20 Acropoli. Bianca, bianchissima. Bella, bellissima. Un po' di pausa, all'ombra degli ulivi. I grilli cantano a squarciagola. Il panorama è spettacolare. Le colline, il mare, la città luccicosa. Atene è meravigliosa.

The Acropolis, Athens. Take a look at the frieze along the top of the inner columns. The frieze that used to be on the outer row is now in the subway. Weird means of preservation, hm?
