Chalice Hill Wells

The Red Spring - one of the two Grail or Chalice Wells in Glastonbury. The waters of the two wells are said to flow over the Holy Grail, deep beneath Chalice Hill, giving them mystical healing properties. Interestingly, despite being only a few dozen feet from each other the waters are quite distinct with the White Spring supplying sweet, calcified water and the Red Spring supplying iron-rich, metallic red water. The Red Spring rises in the tranquil Chalice Well Gardens on the other side of the wall. You have to pay to get in (the gardens needs maintenance after all) but it's not very much and they're a pleasant and peaceful place to relax and recuperate after climbing the Tor. If you don't feel like paying the water flows out onto the street here for the convenience of everyone.

The White Spring - one of the two Grail Wells in Glastonbury. The White Spring actually rises inside the building (which is some kind of hybrid new-age centre) but runs out onto the street here for the convenience of passers by, and - to judge by the bowl - their dogs.

Chalice Well

The lion's head where the water comes out is about 800 years old. The spring water is nice and cool (about 11C), is loaded with iron, but has a bit of a sulphur smell. Tasted kinda weird. The legend goes that Joseph of Arimathea buried the Grail here. Hence, the water turned red from the blood of the Grail. The competing legend is that Fe(II) ions become dissolved in anaerobic water, deep underground. When the water surfaces at the Chalice Well, the Fe(II) is oxidized to Fe(III) and precipitates forming the red color.

The Chalice Well is the oldest continuously used holy well in Britain. If you’ve heard of Dion Fortune you may be interested to know that the Chalice Well Gardens were part of land owned by her. In fact, Marion Zimmer Bradley credits Dion Fortune’s work on the mystical aspects of the Arthurian legend as the inspiration for The Mists of Avalon.

The Chalice Well and the well cover at Chalice Well gardens in Glastonbury, south west England. By the way, if you ever need a B&B in Glastonbury then I recommend www.number37chilkwell.co.uk/ I don't benefit from saying this, I just enjoyed the place - very hospitable.

The house opens periodically so that people can hear the water, be in the water, visit the altars, and reflect. The rules say no photography.
