This stitching of 3 pictures renders the massive impression you get from the dungeon courtyard. The size of the visitors gives you the right scale... ( they are not Hobbits :-) ) 250 different views and documents on the castle in : 250 photos et documents sur le château dans : Built between 1337 and 1373 as a residence for the kings of France, the Vincennes keep is the highest medieval fortified building and one of the best preserved fortresses in Europe. This castle, from the Middle Ages to our time, has consistently found itself at the centre of French History. It rises 50 m above the ground of its courtyard. The instability of the dungeon prompted its closure to the public in October 1995. Its restoration, which was completed in August 2006 was one of the most extensive and technical restoration endeavors to be carried out over recent years. The buiding of the underground railway at the beginning of XIXth century changed the level of the groundwater, which caused an overload on the dungeon's central column, key skeletal stucture of the building. The column started to fissure and some elements of it had to be changed : a very important technical challenge as the load is 250t per floor !. In order to establish how to restore the tower it was necessary first to set up a complete scaffolding structure, to drill sample cores in the walls and foundations and to look at the dynamic and static structural loads. It made possible to study in detail an essential but totally unknown aspect of the construction: the inclusion in the 14th century of 2,500 of iron bars that circle the edifice and act as tie bars in the flooring of its storeys Besides, one-third of the 20,000 blocks visible in the building's facing, have been replaced. This has allowed the tower to regain its original colour and brightness.

(stitching of 7 pictures) Dating back to the 12th century, a little before the Louvre, Vincennes is one of the few castles which, from the Middle Ages to our time, has consistently found itself at the centre of French History. Recent excavations brought to light the vestiges of the residence where Philippe Auguste and Saint Louis remained. Built between 1337 and 1373 as a residence for the kings of France the Vincennes keep, with its 50 meters, is the highest medieval fortified building in Europe. At the heart of the château, the Sainte Chapelle, completed in 1552, combines the somptuousness of the flamboyant Gothic style with a refined Renaissance décor. After the murder of Henry IV, Mary of Medicis ordered the construction of a new building as a safe residence for the young Louis XIII who spent all his youth at Vincennes. Mazarin, who became governor of the château in 1652, commissioned major construction work placed under the management of the architect Le Vau in 1654. The first stage of the work consisted in the modification of the pavilion of Mary of Medicis. A second, much more ambitious phase of work took place from 1656 to 1658. Mazarin and Louis XIV wished to turn Vincennes into a great residence. Openings were made in the south enceinte wall and the tour du Bois, serving as the main entrance, was trimmed down and transformed into an arch of triumph. The Queen's pavilion was built in perfect symmetry with the King's pavilion in the south-east corner of the enceinte. To the north of the pavilions, an arcade wall was built, separating the royal courtyard from the rest of the château. Built between the construction of Vaux-le-Vicomte by Fouquet, and Versailles by Louis XIV, the two pavilions of Vincennes are essential in the defining of the classical style. The King and his court often stayed at Vincennes which was the site of great festivities, theatrical performances and hunting parties. But, in 1670-1671, the King and his court deserted Vincennes for the Château of Versailles.
