One of the great castles of the Perigord, Beynac is famous for its history, its architecture and for its panoramic setting. Defended on the north side by double walls, it looms over the Dordogne river from a precipitous height of 500 ft. Crouching beneath its cliff is a tiny village. A square keep existed here as early as 1115; it was strengthened at the time of the greatest rivalry between the Capetians and Plantagenets. During the Hundred Years War, the Dordogne frequently marked the border between French and English territory; stirring times for Beynac, face to face with its rival Castelnaud on the cliffs opposite. The castle still has its great Hall of State.
