Future City II

Future City II
Made by Ole A. Kjennerud
First of all, I advice to view in original size to get the details:) A landscape version of the same motive as last. I have to say I am really happy with these photos, and I think that they really captures the feeling of Hong Kong - a city always on the move, forward looking and open. Its by far the most efficient city ive been to, and despite its size, its surprisingly clean, which I also feel is represented in this image - its busy, its big but its clean and structured. The process of making this image involves several stages. Firstly, I went to Central where the picture is taken (actually between Central and Sheung Wan) at night right after rush hour. Yeah, normally as a photographer I tend to avoid this moment but for this image it was crucial. The picture comprises 9 exposures whereas I made 3 exposures for three different focus points. The reason for doing so is i) to increase details in highlights and shadows, ii) to increase sharpness and DOF since to small apertures results in diffraction. Hence, I used f/7.1 which is optimal for the EF 10-22 lens. The shutter speed range is from 12 seconds to 71 seconds. Although I believe that the picture is created when you press the shutter, I also think that you have to process it in order to exploit the true potential of the image files. Hence, I spend a great portion of my time processing my images in the digital darkroom. I use both lightroom and photoshop. For this image I have used Lightroom to import the images and adjust whitebalance and reduce saturation before using Photoshop to merge the 9 exposures together. Thus, I do all merging manually by using layers and masks, because I feel that this method enhances control and quality compared to some automatic program. After merging the 9 exposures I convert the image to LAB color mode where I increase contrast(in the L channel) and saturation(here I only increased saturation in the A channel to increase that nice warm tone of the image). At last I sharpen in LAB (the L channel which is good because it doesn't affect color noise). I then save, import the image to Ligthroom again where I did some final adjustments (some local dodging and added split toning for increased blue in the sky). Cheers:)

Please do not post large images/banners or invitations to award groups. ****************************************************************** From Wikipedia: A junk is a Chinese sailing vessel design dating from ancient times and still in use today. Junks were developed during the Han Dynasty (206 BC–220 AD) and were used as ocean-going vessels as early as the 2nd century AD. They evolved in the later dynasties, and were built and used throughout Asia for extensive ocean voyages. They were found, and in lesser numbers are still found, throughout South-East Asia and India, but primarily in China, perhaps today most famously in Hong Kong. Also, found more broadly, is a growing number of modern recreational junk-rigged sailboats. This particular shot is of the Aqua Luna....a tourist boat patterned after the traditional Chinese junk boats. View On Black Rollei R3 exposed at 3200 Kodak HC-110 Dilution B 26 minutes Owing to a combination of less-than comic errors, including an over-optimism about EI3200, a light meter which batteries were becoming flat, not following internet wisdom that high EI and developing in non RHS developer is bad, and haziness of the glass of my flatbed scanner, most of the frames from this roll are seemingly under-exposed with very coarse grain - an experience experienced by inexperienced R3 users, according to da 'net. I also placed the negative upside down too when I scanned it. btw, as advertised, the film does not curl much.

My first experiments in Tilt Shift Miniature Faking. The picture was not originally taken with this technique in mind, so the depth of field is not ideal. The result is not as miniaturesque as a typical tilt-shift fake, but I still like how it highlights the ferry in the middle. This is the original image. Want to learn how to do it? Here is a great tutorial.

Hey Hong Kong, I'm back for work term again. I can't wait any longer for . It's also time to stock up some photos for the upcoming school days :P I apologize for uploading this crappy image since I haven't picked up a camera for months, and apparently my skills have gone rusty. ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- ISO:250 Shutter Speed: 1/50 FL:44mm Ap:f2.8

I dreamed - after an exhaustingly long journey yesterday back from Hong Kong - of temples and trams, ferries and drying fish, noodles, and neon. Despite a pronounced lack of sunshine and blue skies, it was a brilliant time - in a brilliant city. I'm off tomorrow for a week with my best friend in Cambridgeshire (and Norfolk! Hooray!); there should be many many pictures when I get back - of both trips - but for now all I have is Polas, like this. :-)

Stayed at the Four Seasons, as it supposedly has the nicest Hotel pool in HK. I'd have to concur, as it was a great swim each day. View wasn't 1/2 bad either... 5xp tripod-mounted HDR shot taken poolside at the Four Seasons looking out over IFC and Exchange Square. Hong Kong SAR, China *In Singapore now, so not having the extra time I'd like to catchup on everyone's great photostreams. Will be back in Japan Tuesday.

Central Pier

This is the new Central Pier for the historical Star Ferry that transports thousands of passengers across Hong Kong's Victoria Harbor every day. It's construction was controversial, but I do have to say, the new pier is beautiful (it even has a Starbucks inside!) ___ Camera: Nikon D80 Exposure: 3 sec (3) Aperture: f/5.6 Focal Length: 10 mm ISO Speed: 100 Exposure Bias: 0/6 EV

Sunrise

At the end of a night of drink and dancing, we left the clubs and wandered down to the pier, where we waited for the first boat homewards. As I watched the sun rise over Tsim Sha Tsui - as Ryan and Iko are here - its rays reflected in all that glass, I was reminded that, no matter how high or how elaborately we build our skyscrapers, they - and we - will always be at the mercy of nature.

This shot was taken on one of my first nights in Hong Kong. I had walked along the sky bridges to find the spot where Thomas Birke had taken the shot shown in the comments below. From this vantage point, I could capture the underpass, as well as the Bank of China building in the distance. It appears he had a much wider lens, as I haven't captured nearly as much of IFC 2 as he has.

Taken in Central Star Ferry Pier, Hong Kong. The time was just after sunset. The time was 6:14. The clock tower is bright. I think the shot is a bit overexposed. Also there is color temperature problem for using day light film under fluorescent light. But not correcting it is so cool. Lens: Contax Planar 50/1.7 MMJ Film: Kodak E100G slide Camera: Yashica FX-3 Super 2000

Star Ferry

First real go at a candid shot out here - find it very hard to take shots like these. This was taken on the Star Ferry as it was leaving from Central so I could get over to Kowloon quite early to beat the crowds and the heat (how wrong I was !). Still playing with Lightroom and still not really understanding it, so may give this another go in Aperture when I get home.

Back to the archives! This is a shot taken in Hong Kong from the Star Ferry looking back at the Central Ferry Terminal on the way back over to Tsim Tsa Tsui, Kowloon. The Star Ferry is fantastic, super super cheap and you get some great views on your way across the harbour! A HDR from a single RAW. Take a chance and hit L, you never know you might enjoy it!

Typhoons, Tropical cyclones, Hurricanes.. whatever you want to call it. They don't always come on the day you want it the most. On Monday mornings, I sometimes ask myself is it here yet? Well, Goni came on a good day, but left us at the wrong time. What the heck am I doing out here? I still have to work tomorrow! Ciao!
