R.I.P. William Thornton
Made by The Great Photographicon
“SACRED to the memory of WILLIAM THORNTON who departed this life on the 28th of March 1828 aged 67. Deo Spes Meo.” (“In god, my faith” or “My faith [is] in God.”) History buffs and architects may recognize the name of this physician, inventor, painter, abolitionist, and architect. George Washington chose William Thornton’s design as the winner of the competition to design the U.S. Capitol. Thornton was also appointed to serve as one of the three District commissioners overseeing the nascent capital city. More specifically, Thornton supervised the Capitol’s construction until 1802.
