The XYZ Buildings, as they are commonly called, are three skyscrapers of different heights but of similar scaleless box-like mass that line 6th Avenue/Avenue of the Americas. They were part of the Rockefeller Center complex expansion in the 1960's. Harrison & Abromowitz architected the 1959 Time & Life Building between 50th and 51st. After that they followed with the three similar buildings that would make up XYZ, dubbed by Wallace Harrison himself. The X Building, 1251 Avenue of the Americas, is the former Exxon Building). It is the tallest at 750 feet and 54 stories. Sitting betwen 49th and 50th, it was completed in 1951. The Y Building, 1221 Avenue of the Americas, is the McGraw-Hill Building. It was the first one completed in 1969, and the second in height at 674 feet and 51 stories. It sits in between 48th and 49th and shadows over a sunken plaza with the unique . The Z Building, is the Celanese Building. It is the youngest, opening in 1973, and the shortest, at 592 feet and 45 stories. It once housed the headquarters of Celanese, J.P. Stevens, and Burlington.
