Spinster
Made by Linus Gelber
The whirling dervish is a tourist staple in Turkey, although the strange spinning dance that the dervishes do was not really meant for audience entertainment. It is a practice of the Mevlevi Order of Sufis, and is intended to induce a state of religious ecstasy. It's quite strange to watch - mesmerizing, in a word. If there's one thing wrong with my methods as a solo traveler - my brother and his family are gone at this point, headed for points Middle Eastern - it is that I am often incapable of doing touristy things. Case in point: the Dervish Cafe, handily situated between the Blue Mosque at the Aya Sofya, and just a hop and skip from Java Studio (where I enjoy a daily hang), has dervish performances every night. It would be easy enough to sit for a quick glass of tea and watch for a while. But I am nothing if not bloody-minded, so this is shot from just outside the cafe. I loiter a bit, and then move on. This image has been spotted as high as #268 on the Flickr daily Interestingness charts.

Entrance to the Grand Bazaar

I went because it was on my to-do list. The bazaar itself is overwhelming...on any given day there are so many people. I did however find a lovely cafe somewhere in the belly of the bazaar where I was able to grab a moment of peace and a turkish coffee. High energy, but not my scene. I preferred the Arasta Bazaar where I could take my time amongst a smaller crowd.

I got a little lost on my way from the bazaar and Mosque of Suleyman...I made my way to the Sehzade Cami where I met a nice gentleman that insisted that he was a cool guy...he got me back to the general direction of the spice market.

I am always torn when it comes to taking photos in places of worship/burial but they are open to the public...my Catholic guilt caused many lira to be left at all the mosques I visited.

The frescos were repaired when it became a museum to refurbish the faces on the angels that were removed while it was a mosque.
