Plans for the construction of a new cathedral for Madrid dedicated to the Virgin of Almudena began in the 16th century, but the slow construction did not begin until 1879. Francisco de Cubas, the Marquis of Cubas, was the architect who designed and directed the construction in a Gothic revival style. Construction ceased completely during the Spanish Civil War. The project was abandoned until 1950, when Fernando Chueca Goitia adapted the plans of de Cubas to a neoclassical style exterior to match the grey and white façade of the Palacio Real, which stands directly opposite. and was not completed until 1993, when the cathedral was consecrated by Pope John Paul II. On May 22, 2004, the marriage of Felipe, Prince of Asturias to Letizia Ortiz Rocasolano (who was thereafter known as Letizia, Princess of Asturias) took place at the cathedral. The Neo-Gothic interior is uniquely modern, with chapels and statues of contemporary artists, in heretogeneous styles, from historical revivals to pop-art decor. The Neo-Romanesque crypt houses a 16th century image of the Virgen de la Almudena. Further along, the Calle Mayor is the site of excavations which have unearthed remains of Moorish and medieval city walls. Madrid, E 2008_0927_161304_2

Santa María la Real de La Almudena is a Catholic cathedral in Madrid. When the capital of Spain was transferred from Toledo to Madrid in 1561, the seat of the Church in Spain remained in Toledo; so the new capital – unusually for a Catholic country – had no cathedral. Plans were discussed as early as the 16th century to build a cathedral in Madrid dedicated to the Virgin of Almudena, but construction did not begin until 1879. Francisco de Cubas, the Marquis of Cubas, designed and directed the construction in a Gothic revival style. Construction ceased completely during the Spanish Civil War, and the project was abandoned until 1950, when Fernando Chueca Goitia adapted the plans of de Cubas to a baroque exterior to match the grey and white façade of the Palacio Real, which stands directly opposite. The cathedral was not completed until 1993, when it was consecrated by Pope John Paul II. On May 22, 2004, the marriage of Felipe, Prince of Asturias to Letizia Ortiz Rocasolano (known thereafter as Letizia, Princess of Asturias) took place at the cathedral. The Neo-Gothic interior is uniquely modern, with chapels and statues of contemporary artists, in heretogeneous styles, from historical revivals to pop-art decor. The Neo-Romanesque crypt houses a 16th century image of the Virgen de la Almudena. Nearby along the Calle Mayor excavations have unearthed remains of Moorish and medieval city walls. On the 28th of April 2004, Cardinal Antonio María Rouco Varela, Archbishop of Madrid blessed the new paintings in the apse, painted by Kiko Arguello, founder of the Neocatechumenal Way. The cathedral is the seat of the Patriarch of the Indies and the Ocean Sea, an honorific patriarchate created in the sixteenth century, and subsequently an honorific title for the Spanish court's chaplain.

The site on which Almudena Cathedral now stands was originally occupied by Madrid's first mosque, then by a church dedicated to one of Madrid's patron saints, Santa María de la Almudena. Plans for a grand new church in Madrid began in the 16th century after King Philip II made it the capital of Spain. But construction was constantly postponed due to various political issues and opposition from the powerful archdiocese of Toledo. Finally, in 1868, Madrid received permission from the archbishop of Toledo to construct a new church dedicated to the Virgin of Almudena. Construction began in 1883 based on a Neo-Gothic design. The first part to be completed was the crypt, which today still retains the 16th-century image of Madrid's patroness the Virgen de la Almudena. A year later, in 1884, Pope Leo XIII created the Diocese of Madrid, giving Madrid a bishop and raising the status of the new Almudena church to a cathedral. The building plans were updated to reflect the elevated status of the building. Construction on the cathedral progressed slowly and came to a complete halt during the civil war of the 1930s. The process began again in 1944, when a new architect took over, introducing a Neoclassical style that would match the Royal Palace next door. Almudena Cathedral was completed in 1993 and consecrated in person by Pope John Paul II that same year. A statue of the pope in front of the cathedral commemorates the momentous occasion. The cathedral was given another, much-needed publicity boost with the sumptuous wedding of Prince Felipe and Doña Letizia in May 2004, the first such royal event in nearly a century.

■ Santa María la Real de la Almudena's Cathedral (Madrid, Spain). The building at the left is part of the Royal Palace. . The long telephoto focal length used to shot this view from quite far (from Debod's Temple no less) results in the usual telephoto compression effect where parts of the scene which actually are at highly variable distances from the camera appear nevertheless to be very near to one another. Taken handheld with a Panasonic Lumix TZ7 (ZS3) in available light at sunset ( 180 mm, F5.6, 1/800 s., ISO 80, EV -2/3 ). The picture is absolutely unretouched and unprocessed. . This was taken in the Almudena Cathedral, Madrid. Although in the neo-Gothic style, it was completed in 1993 and took a hundred years to build. It strives to impress by its sheer size. It is huge. But what caught my eye as I walked round was this wall of light viewed through an arched opening. Wonderful colours from the light streaming through the pop-art stained glass windows. Now THAT’S impressive. This will be my last post before Easter. To all those that celebrate Easter, I wish you a very happy one. To all those that don't, I hope you have a great weekend.

[25 April 2009 - Madrid, Spain] a little break from the floral theme. the cathedral, as i recall it, wasn't that much coloured with sun looking in through the stained glass windows, although it was still extremely beautiful. I guess it's the fault of my scanner again, a really nice one this time. and the effects i got from Rollei film in quite bad exposure conditions for a ISO200 film are really amazing. i had to do without the film frames i like so much due to some mess they made to the film in the lab:(
