Damaged Desert

This was supposed to be a day off for me, but I ended up working all day :-( I had 128 charts to get done and so far I am only half way. I had to take a break and do something creative to recharge myself. I edited another shot from Pima Canyon that I took with Jarrod the other day. Now back to the charts, then another shift tomorrow and more charts. I love charts! OK now I'm pumped up.

This cardinal-like bird, native to the extreme Southwest, intrigued me. Unfortunately, my first encounter was with at the Desert Museum. I can't count a captured bird on my bird list. Two days later, however, I saw this bird while walking to the car at the end of my last hike today. It looks a bit paler and more ragged, but it counts!

The Saguaro, pronounced sah-wah-roh, (Carnegiea gigantea) is a large, tree-sized cactus species in the monotypic genus Carnegiea. It is native to the Sonoran Desert in Arizona and California, United States and northern Mexico. With all of that said......It's a BIG Cactus that we saw on our short hike today : )

So I was working in Arizona on Monday. At the end of the day, I ran out to maybe shoot a good sunset. I drove to Catalina State Park and thought I might get something cool with the sun setting behind the mountain, only the mountain runs the wrong way. I think I needed to be in Mexico! Oh well.

This is from a plant that is found throughout Arizona. However, it's native to southern Africa. Devil's claw (Harpagophytum procumbens) is a shrub that has lush foilage and red flowers. The plant gets its name from the miniature hooks that cover its fruit.
