Broughty Castle's resurgence as a military installation continued for nearly a century. From 1886 to 1887 a range was built to the east of the castle to house submarine miners. In an emergency these could lay mines in the Tay Estuary to protect it from enemy shipping. Between 1889 and 1891 a magazine was built within the western enclosure which also led to a major remodelling of the gun emplacements. The castle was in military use until 1932, and again between 1939 and 1949. The last defence-related alteration was made in the second world war when a defence post was built on top of the main tower. In 1969 the castle opened as a museum operated by Dundee city council. The museum continues to be operated by the Council, while the structure of the castle itself is in the care of Historic Scotland.

After the rain, Broughty Castle

A landscape photographers top tip is to shoot after the rain. It rained all day here and it cleared this evening. The result was a crystal clear atmosphere so I could not resist a quick trip to this local castle. Also wanted to try out the camera after re-booting all settings. Results are visibly sharper with better colours.

The castle keep - Broughty Ferry Castle - originally built in 1495/96, although the site may have been first fortified in 1454 when the fourth Earl of Angus was granted permission to build a structure on the site, it has also been modified and extended many times over the years.

It's got a pretty grim history of sieges, slaughter and bloodshed. I don't know why we often tend to think castles look pretty and romantic half the time. In this effort, I'm trying to get a sense of some of that real hard, grimness from the outside here.
