Copyright © PS Architecturally revised foyer, Castel Grande, Bellinzona, Ticino........... I was well impressed by the recent architectural work. The massive strength and character of local gneiss granite had been absorbed. The modern work was both sympathetic/understanding to the old, yet non-imitatively modern of its time. Intervention here is not merely a fashion word of justification. These latest extensive restorations were carried out till the early 1990s by Aurelio Galfetti. The inner courtyard, the strong-styled access directly from the town centre, the elegant clarity of new work for the museums, are all lasting quality; integrated, insightful, but not phoney or unimaginative. And exploring around the Grande, I discovered a series of powerful spaces such as the rowed vineyards running between castellated town walls to outer landscape, and the square-helical tower-stairs popping out to rampart walkways with explosive views. Bold forms, and angled shadows, composed up from the bedrock. But those great walls stretched out down the slope heading to further structure silhouetted across the valley.
