Sin dai tempi più remoti della Serenissima, le relazioni commerciali con la Dalmazia, sulla sponda opposta dell'Adriatico, si erano rivelate molto importanti per gli sviluppi della crescente influenza di Venezia nel panorama storico-politico dell'epoca. Queste relazioni divennero ancora più strette dopo il passaggio dell'intera Dalmazia sotto il dominio veneziano, all'inizio del XV secolo. A Venezia, gli immigrati dalmati, detti anche Schiavoni, si raccolsero in confraternita, che fu regolamentata dal Consiglio dei Dieci nel 1451. Inizialmente si riunivano in un terreno del convento dei Gerosolimitani presso l'Ospedale di Santa Caterina e la chiesa di San Giovanni di Malta. La confraternita era frequentata sia dai dalmati residenti che da quelli di passaggio e per lo più si trattava di operai e marinai. I santi protettori della comunità dalmata erano san Giorgio, san Trifone e san Girolamo, ai quali si aggiunse san Matteo dal 24 aprile 1502, quando la confraternita ricevette con una solenne cerimonia una sua reliquia donata da Paolo Vallaresso, già Provveditore della Repubblica a Corone e Modone in Cipro, scalzato dai Turchi ottomani. Questa è la sala superiore della scuola dalmata dei santi Giorgio e Trifone detta dell'Albergo è di ridotte dimensioni, è caratterizzata da un soffitto ligneo con decorazioni pittoriche, opera di Bastian de Muran e dalla collocazione lungo le pareti di varie tele di scuola palmesca. Presenta un altare con i Santi protettori della Scuola e ai suoi lati due tavole dorate: San Girolamo e San Trifone (XV secolo). =========================================================================== The Scuola di San Giorgio degli Schiavoni, also known as Scuola Dalmata di San Giorgio and Trypho, is a landmark of the city of Venice, located in the Castello district. From the earliest times of the Serenissima, trade relations with Dalmatia, on the opposite shore of the Adriatic, had proved very important for the development of the growing influence of Venice in historical and political landscape of the time. These relations became even closer after the passage of the whole Dalmatia under Venetian rule at the beginning of the fifteenth century. In Venice, the Dalmatian immigrants, also known as 'Schiavoni', gathered in the brotherhood, which was regulated by the Council of Ten in 1451. Initially they met in a land of the convent of the Knights at the Hospital of Santa Caterina and the church of San Giovanni di Malta. The brotherhood was frequented by both residents and those Dalmatian way and mostly it was the workers and sailors. The patron saints of the Dalmatian community were St. George, St. Tryphon and St. Jerome, who joined St. Matthew since April 24, 1502, when the fraternity received with a solemn ceremony, a relic donated by Paul Vallaresso, former superintendent of the Republic in Corona and Modone in Cyprus, ousted by the Ottoman Turks. This is the upper room of the school of Dalmatian saints George and Tryphon that is also extremely small size, has a wooden ceiling with painted decorations, designed by Bastian de Muran and the location along the walls of several paintings by school palmesca. It has an altar with the patron saints of the School and its two side tables gilded St. Jerome and St. Tryphon (XV century).

Paragonando Venezia ad un pesce, come nel libro di Tiziano Scarpa, Castello può rappresentarne la coda, essendo posto all'estremità est della città e vista la sua forma stretta prima quindi allargata e biforcuta infine. Esso è dunque una penisola e confina a nord-ovest con il sestiere di Cannaregio nel tratto compreso fra le Fondamente Nove e Campo Santa Marina, e a sud-ovest con il sestiere di San Marco nel tratto compreso fra la Parrocchia di San Lio e Piazza San Marco. Uno dei ponti che uniscono Castello col sestiere di San Marco è il ponte della Paglia che mette in comunicazione il molo della Piazzetta San Marco con la Riva degli Schiavoni, scavalcando il Rio di Palazzo (adiacente al Palazzo Ducale). Il sestiere di Castello è collegato a quello di Cannaregio tramite il ponte dei Santi Giovanni e Paolo che, di fronte all'omonima basilica, scavalca il Rio dei Mendicanti a pochi passi dal monumento a Bartolomeo Colleoni del Verrocchio. Castello è anche l'unico dei sestieri veneziani a non affacciarsi sul Canal Grande. Il nome del sestiere deriva da una fortificazione presente nel primo medioevo sull'Isola di Olivolo, oggi isola di San Pietro di Castello. Qui si trova la Basilica di San Pietro di Castello sede vescovile fino al 1807, anno in cui Napoleone la trasferì nella Basilica di San Marco, fino allora cappella del Doge ed usata solo per eventi speciali. It is therefore a peninsula and is bordered to the north-west with the Cannaregio district in the stretch between the Fondamenta Nove and Campo Santa Marina, and south-west with the district of San Marco in the section between the parish of San Lio Square and San Marco. One of the bridges that unite with the Castello district of San Marco is the straw bridge that connects the pier to the Piazzetta San Marco, Riva degli Schiavoni, crossing the Rio di Palazzo (adjacent to the Palazzo Ducale). I Greci riuscirono ad ottenere il permesso di costruire la chiesa, e di poter celebrare messa con rito ortodosso, alla fine del '400. La costruzione della chiesa fu portata a termine nel 1561 da Giannantonio Chiona. La chiesa è ad una navata con una cupola emisferica posizionata centralmente nella pianta dell'edificio, la quale fu aggiunta secondariamente (1571). L'interno della chiesa ospita molte tele di pittori greci del XVI e XVII sec. tra cui i cretesi Michele Damaschinòs ed Emanuele Zane. Del primo si distingue Figurazioni di Santi e le 12 Feste facenti oarte dell'Iconostasi posta sulla parete di fondo; del secondo si può ammirare Abramo e Melchisedech nella parte centrale dell'Iconostasi. E a tale funzione venne destinato anche dopo la riammissione dei Minori Osservanti a Venezia nel 1836 i quali per forza di cose dovettero andare ad abitare in un secondo convento, fondato nel XV secolo da Maria Benedetta principessa di Carignano e Angela Canal per le Terziarie Francescane. Dopo averlo ampliato essi stessi avendo inglobato anche il Palazzo della Nunziatura finalmente nel 1866 dopo un lungo peregrinare poterono tornare nel loro antico convento (comperato dal Commissariato di Terra Santa). Qui vennero sepolti molti nobili veneziani. Oggi nei due chiostri si svolgono esposizioni temporanee, concerti e vengono adibiti a padiglioni di alcune esposizioni della Biennale. =========================================================================== Cloister of the convent of San Francesco della Vigna used as a cemetery (you can see on the floor slabs Tombari), underwent some restoration over the years but because of the suppression of religious orders during the Napoleonic period was turned into barracks. L'Arsenale di Venezia, sorto sopra due isolette denominate le Gemelle , col tempo, è stato ampliato in più parti con nuove costruzioni e nuovi scali fino a formare una vasta area industriale, che si snodava anche nel tessuto urbano , protetta da mura e da torri, nella zona nord-est della città, nel sestiere di Castello. The Bridge of Sighs (Italian: Ponte dei Sospiri) is one of many bridges in Venice. The enclosed bridge is made of white limestone and has windows with stone bars. It passes over the Rio di Palazzo and connects the old prisons to the interrogation rooms in the Doge's Palace. It was designed by Antoni Contino (whose uncle Antonio da Ponte had designed the Rialto Bridge), and built in 1602. The view from the Bridge of Sighs was the last view of Venice that convicts saw before their imprisonment. The bridge name, given by Lord Byron in the 19th century, comes from the suggestion that prisoners would sigh at their final view of beautiful Venice out the window before being taken down to their cells. In reality, the days of inquisitions and summary executions were over by the time the bridge was built, and the cells under the palace roof were occupied mostly by small-time criminals

Venice, Italy, early in the morning by the side of the Grand Canal, the church in the background is Santa Maria della Salute. In October of 1630, after nearly a third of Venice's 150,000 citizens had been killed by plague, the Venetian Senate made an offer to God: Stop the plague, and we'll build a church to honor the Virgin Mary. God came through, or maybe the onset of cooler weather reduced the population of plague-ridden fleas. Whatever the reason, the plague was stopped in its tracks. The Venetian authorities honored their promise by giving the Virgin a prime chunk of real estate near the tip of Dorsoduro, where the Grand Canal merged with St. Mark's Basin. In the resulting competition for a church design, the winner was an unknown architect named Baldassare Longhena, who had proposed a massive octagonal basilica that combined elements of Venetian Byzantine architecture with domes inspired by St. Peter's in Rome. Longhena described his design as strange, worthy, and beautiful...in the shape of a round 'machine' such as had never been seen, or invented either in its whole or in part from any other church in the city. The resulting church wasn't completed until half a century later, in 1682.

This is taken in the wonderful Ca' del Sol mask makers in Venice. It's an incredible shop, with wonderful photographer friendly owners. I'd recommend a visit to anyone and everyone, especially if you want to take pictures. www.cadelsolmascherevenezia.com/en/masks/ I particularly like the mouse/rat masks. Though this wasn't my favourite of those (to follow), the spread of masks on the wall behind was the most impressive when bokehed. I think this one only really comes to life viewed in lightbox/large on black. I've gone for a slightly brighter feel than my usual, and the black sets it off much more effectively than the white, imho. I've had a few notes about the airfare I mentioned a few posts ago - Venice direct is usually an expensive option even on Ryanair (or your chosen equivalent, other low-cost airlines are available!). I suggest flying to somewhere along the main rail route to Milan; Bergamo or Brescia are good options. From these you can take the train across very cheaply and easily; and it's rather fun traveling by train in itself.

On the occasion of my first flickrversary earlier this week, I thought I would finally upload this photo of a Venetian doorbell, which served as my first buddy icon. I liked its similarity with the default grey icon, but eventually replaced it because the face looked way too sad and miserable ... Although a member for a year now, I've only been using the interactive possibilities of flickr over the past three months or so, but the number of genuinely nice fellow flickrists around here is amazing! Thanks to all of you for taking the time to stop by my stream and leave encouraging comments. It's been a great experience and inspiration for me :-)

In questo scatto ho voluto ritrarre un momento della vita quotidiana di Venezia nei pressi del Ponte del Diavolo. Ci sono tutti gli elementi che caratterizzano le calle di questa splendida città: il canale (ce ne sono 150 in tutta la città), la gondola parcheggiata lungo uno dei lati, il ponte di attraversamento del canale (ce ne sono 400 in tuttà la città), la moltitudine di turisti a passeggio per le calle e la gente seduta ai tavolini che si gode qualche attimo di relax durante una splendida giornata primaverile.
