Fannette Island

Fannette Island is the only island in Lake Tahoe, California/Nevada, United States. It lies within Emerald Bay. Over a long period of time, it was called many different names, including Coquette, Fanette, Baranoff, Dead Man's, Hermit's, and Emerald Isle. The island contains what is left of Tea House, a building constructed by the owner of Vikingsholm, Mrs. Lora Josephine Knight. Fannette Island, along with Vikingsholm and Emerald Bay, is a part of Emerald Bay State Park. It is accessible by boat or by swimming. (Wikipedia: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fannette_Island)

Inspiration point has some excellent views of Emerald Bay, although on my recent trip I've discovered that most of the views have now been blocked thanks to the trees that have grown in around the point. Inspiration Point is itself just a rest stop where you can pull over and brave going to the bathroom or just to walk around the point and enjoy the views. This photo is about as open as I could find and even then trees are crowding my shot. Some clear views of the bay can be had from the road, so get back in the car and drive down a bit until you get to a spot where you can pull over and snap some shots.

Fannette Island in Emerald Bay is the only island in Lake Tahoe. It was the home of Captain Dick Them's my toes Barter from 1863-1873. The eccentric captain had moved from England and built his own tomb and chapel on the island. He enjoyed sailing and earned his nickname from his penchant of showing his self-amputated toes to guests. Ironically, he was never interred in the chapel he built, as he died in a storm and his body was not found.

After my solo morning trip, we all hopped into my son-in-law's truck and drove to the west side of Lake Tahoe. We stopped at an overlook to view Emerald Bay. The island is called Francette Island, and is the only island on Lake Tahoe. It was owned at one time by an extremely wealthy woman, who built a teahouse on the island's summit. She and her guests would be rowed out to the island to have tea in grand style.

My mom, my sister, and my husband at Lake Tahoe - Inspiration Point. My husband's first digital camera is around his neck. We both had the same model. Also, my mom is wearing a pair of wristies. They are perfect for keeping the hands warm when it is cold and keeping the fingers free while shooting pictures. They are fingerless gloves.

I like the fact that you can see the road at the top of this photo. I believe you can also see part of the path descending to Vikingsholm. Update -- replaced with a version with colors adjusted to better match the original slide. Note that this also makes the colors match up much better with the digital shots taken at the same time.

The road went on a narrow ridge - on one side was this lake and on the other side was Emerald Bay. It was quite a steep drop off on both sides with no safety barriers!

Likely taken for a geocache (GC80AA)... I'm sure she's likely not happy with this shot, either (but I think it's cute, so sue me)

There was an amazing amount of tourists on a Monday. I had to snipe this shot from a Vista Point overlooking Emerald Bay.
