Assignment: Magazine Ad Stock Your mission this week, should you choose to accept it, is to produce stock photos that would be suitable for use as a background for a full page advertisement – the sort you see in those glossy magazines that line the grocery store checkout aisles. What type of product or service it’s aimed at is up to you - pharmaceuticals, electronics, financial services, dating services - anything goes. Keep in mind that your photo will cover the entire page and the art director will be looking for space to insert wording and product/service photo overlays etc. Flip through a few magazines and you’ll soon get the idea. No magazine handy? …you can find some examples here: www.magazine-ads.com/drg.html In your WIT description, you can decide to tell us what sort of product or service you were aiming your photo at …or let us guess. Restriction: Don’t include the product. Your job is to shoot the cowboy, not the pack of Marlboro’s. Dare: Add an element of humour. What it took: Rethinking my original idea. Almost didn't come up with anything, but in the end threw together some ad copy with one of shots from a hike my wife and I went on this afternoon. Example ad can be seen .

We shot these at twilight with two Olympus speed-lights both without any light modifiers, so they were pretty hard lights. One was placed camera right and the other behind the model and slightly to the left. I like the almost rim light we got on the hair and arm but don't like the deepness of the shadows on her face and chin. I think putting an umbrella on the front one and adding one more light for fill from the left front would have helped. Model: Heidi Mason Learn how to light at Strobist.
