Enticing
Made by pennyeast
Nasturtium - I love it that this common name literally means, nose-twister or nose-tweaker! I can just imagine getting a nose tweaked in there!!! LOL!! Garden Nasturtiums are grown for their flowers, and also because both their leaves and flowers are edible; they can be used in salads, imparting a delicately peppery taste. The seeds are also edible, and can be used as a caper substitute. Nasturtium has long been used in herbal medicine as a disinfectant and wound-healing herb, and as an expectorant to relieve chest conditions. All parts of the plant appear to be antibiotic and an infusion of the leaves can be used to increase resistance to bacterial infections and to clear nasal and bronchial catarrh. The remedy seems to both reduce catarrh formation and stimulate the clearing and coughing up of phlegm. The leaves are antibacterial, antifungal, antiseptic, aperient, depurative, diuretic, emmenagogue, expectorant, laxative and stimulant. A glycoside found in the plant reacts with water to produce an antibiotic. The plant has antibiotic properties towards aerobic spore forming bacteria. Extracts from the plant have anticancer activity. The plant is taken internally in the treatment of genito-urinary diseases, respiratory infections, scurvy and poor skin and hair conditions. Externally it makes an effective antiseptic wash and is used in the treatment of baldness, minor injuries and skin eruptions. Any part of the plant can be used, it is harvested during the growing season and used fresh. On Explore Apr 24, 2008 #474

Beechcraft T-6 Military Trainer
Made by smee.bruce
Hawker Beechcraft Corporation’s (HBC) T-6 military trainer recently debuted in Africa as part of a demonstration tour en route to the African Aerospace & Defense (AAD) Expo in Capetown, South Africa. The trip includes stops in Algeria, Gabon, Angola and Namibia with demonstration flights in Nigeria and South Africa. From HBC’s headquarters in Wichita, Kan., to the arrival at AAD in South Africa, the T-6 turboprop will cover nearly 9,500 miles. The AT-6 draws its heritage from HBC’s T-6 A/B Texan trainer aircraft. Designed to provide close air support and meet the demands of the irregular warfare environment, the AT-6 is outfitted with a more powerful engine, a variety of self-protection mechanisms, multiple secure communications functions and advanced intelligence surveillance and reconnaissance capabilities. www.amtonline.com/article/article.jsp?siteSection=1&i... The T-6 is versatile, safe, and effective for the most basic flight training tasks. With a top speed of 316 knots, a 7G to 3.5 G airframe, and an advanced digital cockpit, it is equally adept at teaching the most advanced aerobatic maneuvers and simulated combat training tasks—tasks that could previously be accomplished only in far more expensive aircraft. www.hawkerbeechcraft.com/military_and_special_mission/mil...

Nasturtium

Planet Pinelands
Made by Blyzz
Still working to perfect this technique. 1: Can't really take this type of photo at sunset. 2: need to use a tripod 3: panorama needs to match on both sides (or use a decent 360° one) . 4: I've thought of using another nice finishing touch. (I didn't do it to this one, but I'll use it on my next one: Once all the pictures of the 360 degree panorama are taken, as usual, take another picture looking straight down. of the ground below where the tripod was, trying not to get any shadow in it. Once you've done that, then use the sperize option in Photoshop on it and then place it in the middle of the mini planet to get a nice finished look, instead of the stretched pixel lines that normally appear at the middle. Naturally, you'll need to position it properly and then blend it at the edges to get it to look good. (and get the settings in the spherize correct). Maybe I'll post a how-to, next time I do one of these. Featured on: www.hackaday.com/2008/07/08/guide-to-creating-small-planets/ Explored: Jun 27, 2008 #479

Athlone Cooling Towers...falling.
Made by Chantal Steyn
Thousands of spectaters gathered around in Cape Town yesterday to catch a last glimpse at one of the most prominent and historical structures in the city's skyline before it was imploded, 3 minutes early, at 11:57 am. The cooling towers had to be destroyed after they became unstable and it was feared that Cape Town's infamous strong winds could bring them crashing down. The site will be cleared up and the rubble recycled into bricks. www.capegateway.gov.za/eng/your_gov/12107/news/2010/aug/2... Photographing this event was quite a challenge with rain started to pour down and people scrambling everywhere to get the best view, just to be caught off guard when the implosion happened 3 minutes early and there was no time to zoom in.... but it was still impressive and I am glad to have been witness to it. Enjoy your week, thanks for visiting...

1st CHDK! Wow, 5 exposure HDR with el cheapo point and shoot! At first glance you may think that this is a pretty ordinary HDR/OOB. . . well it is, BUT what is amazing is that it is a 5exp HDR taken with a 5 MegaPixel Canon a460 . . . which is about the mickey mousest point and shoot you can get! It cannot shoot continuous and cannot exposure bracket . . well now it can! I was invited (thank you) to post a picture of mine on the point and shoot group and, while reading around the site found the chitchat about CHDK !(CHDK is a hack of the camera's firm ware that turns it into a be-all-see-all-singing-dancing-powerhouse . .well almost!). Seeing as I had the a460 I said to myself, self, why not. I was gobsmacked when it all loaded and worked without a hitch . . what fun! The images taken by the camera are at the bottom of course. (Google CHDK!)

Athlone Power Station, Cape Town
Made by DanieVDM
This coal fired electrical generating plant has been out of operation for a few years now. It has long been a feature of the Cape Town landscape. It is planned to be demolished in the future to make way for a new development. During all the power outages in 2006 this station was sorely needed, but the time it would have taken to rail the coal down and get it commissioned again would have taken too long. Published at www.industcards.com/st-coal-south-africa.htm (also has interesting stats on this power station) and at redgreenandblue.org/2008/08/21/colorado-to-ditch-two-coal....

Gloriosa superba - (Flame Lily)
Made by pennyeast
Gloriosa superba Common name: Flame Lily Family: Colchicaceae Flame lilies are grown commercially as sources of colchicine, which is used medicinally in the treatment of gout. Demecolcine (= colchamine) extracted from Colchicum corms has also been used medicinally, principally in the treatment of chronic myeloid leukaemia. They are also used by certain people to treat intestinal worms, bruises, infertility, skin problem and impotence. It is also said that sap from the leaf tip is used for pimples and skin eruptions by Tswana and Masai farm workers (Roberts, 1990). NB. Chemical research showed that all part of this plant, both above and below ground, are extremely poisonous and ingestion could be fatal.

Agapanthus
Made by pennyeast
Agapanthus praecox Common name: Nile Lily Family Agapanthaceae Agapanthus is used to treat heart disease, paralysis, coughs, colds, chest pains and tightness. It is also used with other plants in various medicines taken during pregnancy to ensure healthy children, or to augment or induce labour. Hikers put leaves in their shoes to soothe the feet, and wrap weary feet in the leaves for half an hour. The long, strap-like leaves also make an excellent bandage to hold a dressing or poultice in place, and winding leaves around the wrists is said to help bring a fever down. Agapanthus contains several saponins and sapogenins that generally have anti-inflammatory, anti-oedema, antitussive, and immunoregulatory properties.

Hi Everyone!! I'm happy to say that my ancient and honourable computer is up and running again - for now anyway!!! (I shudder at the thought of replacing it!) I will be around to catch up just as quickly as I can!! Having had a bit of a scare, I have uploaded lots of stuff that has been lurking on my hard drive for ages. I backdated it all and slipped it into my sets so that no one would feel pressurised to page through a bunch of very ordinary images! If, however, you have a special interest in flowers and would like to have a quick browse through the new images, they are all in my New and Improved .

OK, So it feels like it's been about a decade since I edited a pic further than red eye removal. . . This morning I had a spare 30 mins after Mia's 5AM bottle and dusted off the photoshop icon and pulled up a pic from my last birthday. I forgot how difficult it is to mask hair so forgive the glaring mistakes, but i don't think the end result is too bad given the time spent . . check out the original to see differences... comments and tips welcome (especially on hair masking), just keep the crit constructive :-) Original Version Here: flic.kr/p/7B2rLG

Two Images Straight out of Camera: 13mm, 15sec @ f/10, ISO 100 - Taken at 20:38 CAT Not quite sure which image i prefer, the shadows from the cloud bank has made funny streaks on this shot....mmmm! I think I prefer this one... This is taken from the Cape Town suburb, literally called Sunset Beach. We had a stunning evening, with absolutely no wind - quite unusual for this time of year and particularly in this part of town. That is Cape Town's 'Central Business District' (CBD) lights below the mountain.

Newlands Swimming Pool
Made by mallix
Went for a quick swim with friends on Tuesday. The last time I swam here was in the 1980's (I learnt to swim here) - glad to say that nothing has changed, still as retro as ever - will be uploading some pics of the inside soon. Apparently the stand structure will be undergoing a revamp soon. Does anybody have more information of the architect / history? A picture of this pool taken in the 1960's can be seen . As a child my parents used to rent out the pool at night - fun.

78/365 Full Moon Rising
Made by j_hallward
On the 19th of March a full Moon of rare size and beauty will rise in the east at sunset. It's a super perigee moon--the biggest in almost 20 years. Full Moons vary in size because of the oval shape of the Moon's orbit. It is an ellipse with one side (perigee) about 50,000 km closer to Earth than the other (apogee) Nearby perigee moons are about 14% bigger and 30% brighter than lesser moons that occur on the apogee side of the Moon's orbit.
