On Monday I went to Canary Wharf to take some photos, I am sure some of you will already be aware where this is leading and that it wasn’t the best choice of locations for a days trouble free picture taking. Not that is if you don’t like the idea of enduring the wrath of a man in uniform . I went with my 12 year old son, who doesn’t have his own Flickr site because he may be too young (haven’t checked the age rules yet) but if he did have one it would probably look something like Anyway, we took about a dozen photos of the buildings and then walked around before starting to take some more. Suddenly a security guard appeared on the opposite side of the road and shouted something across over the traffic noise. ‘What did he say’ said my son. ‘I am not sure’ I said ‘I think he said ‘Nose Picker’. Now I’ve told you not to do that in public haven’t I?’ ‘Sorry?’ I shouted back at him ‘No pictures’ he replied. ‘Yes there are, I replied. I have checked the LCD screen and they are coming out fine’ ‘No’ he shouted ‘You are not allowed to take photos here’ ‘What?? But I am outside, I am in a public place’ ‘No, this is private property and photography is not allowed’ ‘What does he mean’ said my son. ‘Haven’t a clue, he’s probably drunk. Just put point the camera at the floor and wait for him to go away’ At which point the security guard turned around and went back to sit in his cabin on his oversized rear, probably exhausted at having to actually get up and walk 15 metres down the road. Not wishing to exert the poor guy any further we walked away and started taking photos around the other side of the building and noticed another bemused looking man with camera in hand wondering why some man in uniform had just him accused him of being a nose picker. Needless to say when I got home I checked the internet to find that Canary Wharf and many other seemingly public places are indeed private property where photography is banned for security reasons. Now I don’t want to give any clues to budding terrorists but surely it must have occurred to someone that there is a whole host of info and pictures on the web that would make photo reconnaissance a bit it of an unnecessary waste of a train ticket. At least at the expense of depriving normal law abiding citizens the right to take photos for pleasure. Anyway I am telling you all this because I have a cunning plan should any of you want to take photos on private property and you’re worried about being asked to delete all the photos by some over excited security guard. Before you leave home simply make sure the first shot on each of your storage cards is a computer screen shot of the words ‘No images’. Then show this to the uniformed representative of officialdom. If you are using a film camera simply sellotape the same thing to the back of the camera and I am sure you will get away with it, these guys really aren’t that bright you know.

(architect: César Pelli) You have to take this shot quickly - easier to do at 7.25am on a Sunday when there are less no photos here sir security guard jobsworths on duty. I can recommend the Bene Bene breakfast box £4.50 - the works.
