Asleep At Nathan Phillips Square - HDR/Tone-Mapped

Asleep At Nathan Phillips Square - HDR/Tone-Mapped
Made by jwvraets
For those of you familiar with Toronto, the title is not a reflection on political activity at City Hall, although..... Nathan Phillips Square is the public square bounded on the North by Toronto City Hall, on the East by Bay Street (the financial district) and on the South by Queen Street. After dark, the square is relatively quiet and if the weather is reasonable (which it was) some of Toronto's homeless people take the opportunity to find a place to sleep. These two gentlemen had found a couple of prime sleeping spots, off the ground on sheltered, clean benches along the South end of the square. Hard to believe this is right on the edge of the financial district where there is more wealth than you can imagine, being exchanged on a daily basis. - JW This image was processed in HDR software but since it was a single image, only the tone-mapping portion of the software came into play. Hence the image is tone-mapped and not strictly HDR. The reason for using the tone mapping was to tame the extreme contrasts in lighting between the background buildings and the relatively dimly lit, darkly clothed men. The single image was captured using a hand-held Nikon D5000 fitted with a Nikkor 18-105mm VR (thank goodness for VR) lense set to 32mm, Auto Exposure mode (flash suppressed) so ISO1600, f/4.2, 1/5 sec. HDR/tone-mapping done suing Luminance/Qtpfsgui with settings as indicated in the file name as well as data below. PP in GIMP: loaded the image and duplicate as 2 layers, corrected the bottom one to get better detail in the shops in the background ignoring the impact on the 'green' areas, then adjusted tones, contrast in the top/green layer (green because of meal arc lighting) to make the men clearer, then reduced green saturation and the red saturation selectively in the faces and hands of the men. Used a large soft-edged eraser to remove the blown background wind areas and reveal the corrected layer below, flattened, sharpened, added border, scaled to 1024 wide for posting. ============================= DSC_7502_vagrantscityhalltonecolbalrotadjbordx1024_pregamma_1_mantiuk_contrast_mapping_0.4_saturation_factor_1.2_detail_factor_1 ============================= Qtpfsgui 1.9.3 tonemapping parameters: Operator: Mantiuk Parameters: Contrast Mapping factor: 0.4 Saturation Factor: 1.2 Detail Factor: 1 ------ PreGamma: 1

Toronto: Hippo Tour Bus arrives

Toronto: Hippo Tour Bus arrives
Made by Chris Devers
In Boston, we have the Duck Tours, so called because they use military surplus DUKW amphibious boats, invented during World War 2 for, among other things, the invasion of Normandy. Apparently, the Duck tours have started some kind of worldwide trend, and now other waterside cities have their own animal truck tour companies. (Usually based on something much more modern & comfortable than the DUKW boats.) In Toronto, it's the Hippo tours. The driver seemed very impressed that we were from Boston, saying that her company got the idea from here. She was disappointed that we'd never actually tried it out at home, which really is too bad -- I hear it's fun. Speaking of which, need to rectify that this summer if we can...

A statue takes a rest on Front Street in Toronto. Toronto is the provincial capital of Ontario and the largest city in Canada. It is located in Southern Ontario on the northwestern shore of Lake Ontario.
