RiverLINE Opening Weekend

A New Jersey Transit RiverLINE DMU sits at the Walter Rand Transportation Center in Camden, New Jersey during the route's opening weekend. Camden City Hall is in the background. The Stadler GTW 2/6, produced in Bussnang, Switzerland, was the first new Diesel Multiple Unit (DMU) railcar in decades to run regularly in the United States. It is still possible to fund some Budd DMUs in service in Alaska, Texas, Canada and some other places. The RiverLINE began operation in March 2004. A consortium of Bombardier and Bechtel renovated one of the nation's first rail lines to create this service, which runs from Camden to Trenton, NJ through bucolic towns along the Delaware River. Bechtel/Bombardier operates the service for NJT under a Design/Build/Operate/Maintain (DBOM) contract. Update: Other modern DMUs running in North America include Ottawa's O-Train (Bombardier Talent), California's Sprinter (Siemens Desiro) and Austin's CapMetro, which will soon begin operating Stadler GTW 2/6s. Colorado Rail Car produces a DMU that is operating in Miami (Tri-Rail) and will soon operate outside of Portland (Tri-Met).
