The middle of the river before & after the Zoo bridge is usually 29-30 ft deep. @ this time the water is lower @ about 25 ft. Since this bridge had been built the river bottom is dredged deeper so water can flow under thick winter ice. Ice jams during winter seasons can wash the bridge out so thats the purpose of a deeper basin. I received the story from one of these firemen.
