Brewer's Blackbird - female

The sharp conical bill tells us its one of the icterids, and the over-all gray/brown suggest a female or juvenile. Tail and bill too long for a Cowbird (we have lots of Brown-headed at Lake Tahoe), and tail too short for a Grackle. So Brewer's Blackbird it is! Very common western blackbird, although probably not as numerous as the Red-winged.

This is a shot just as the sun broke thru the clouds on the northern coast of Lake Tahoe, just barely on the California side. The sand had a unique coarseness and was a bit reddish...very cool.
