The Green Mosque in Bursa

The Green Mosque, or Yeşil Mosque was built between 1419 and 1424 for Sultan Mehmet I. It is said to be the first mosque built in a truly Turkish style and many consider it to be the most beautiful in Turkey. It is beautifually decorated with tiles from nearby Izmit, many of which are green, giving the mosque its English name of Green Mosque. The Mosque is in a beautiful setting, slightly to the east of the city centre and is almost for itself worth making the two hour trip from Istanbul to go and see.

The Yeşil Tomb is opposite the Yeşil Mosque and is the place where Sultan Mehmet I lies buried with hi family. It is now closed for renovations, but can be partially viewed from the outside. The blue tiles are also from Izmit.
