Towneley Level Crossing Frame
Made by Ingy The Wingy
Towneley Level Crossing Frame signal box located alongside the Down East Lancs line by Moseley Road level crossing at Burnley. Saturday 26th May 1984 Towneley West signal box was a Saxby and Farmer Type 9 design built in 1878 for the Lancashire and Yorkshire Railway. It opened fitted with a 26 lever Saxby and Farmer frame which was replaced at some stage by a 24 lever Lancashire and Yorkshire Railway Tappet frame. The signal box was renamed Towneley Station on 3rd December 1951 when the 624 yard distant Towneley Colliery Sidings signal box was closed. The signal box was renamed Towneley Level Crossing Frame and was reduced to a non block post controlling the adjacent level crossing only on 7th October 1973 when signalling passed to Preston power signal box. The frame was replaced by a small switch panel in 1979 which was in turn replaced by Unipart Rail individual function switch console circa. January 2007. The new console carries the name Towneley Level Crossing Missing from below the 3x2 pane operating floor windows is a row of single pane windows which have been boarded over The name plate is a British Rail corporate identity printed design Note - although the name change on 3rd December 1951 was amended in the 1956 sectional appendix supplement and shown in subsequent sectional appendices, the Preston signal box - East Lancashire Re-signalling notice (SN.1330G) shows the box as still being named Towneley West

Burnley Central Station
Made by Ingy The Wingy
Burnley Central Station signal box located alongside the Up Main line between Burnley Central station and Burnley Viaduct (behind the signal box). Monday 30th May 1983 Burnley E.L. No1 signal box was a Lancashire and Yorkshire Railway Standard design which opened on 7th December 1900 fitted with a 30 lever Lancashire and Yorkshire Railway Tappet frame, replacing an earlier box located slightly nearer the viaduct. The signal box was renamed Burnley Bank Top South in first few years of the 20th century and in 1931 it was further renamed Burnley Bank Top Station after the frame was extended to 36 levers allowing the closure of Burnley Bank Top North box. On 2nd October 1944 the box was renamed again, this time to Burnley Central Station. By the time closure came on 7th December 1986 in connection with the singling of the Gannow Junction to Colne line the frame had been reduced to 24 levers. The box and frame surviving into the early 1990s before disappearing (for preservation at Brewood Hall in Staffordshire?) Note the word Central on the 1931 London Midland and Scottish Railway nameboard is the smaller sized post-1935 lettering fitted after the box was renamed in 1944

DSC_0008 - "A million miles away..." - Explored!
Made by SWJuk
Thank you! - Made Explore 27/07/11, #374 Taken outdoors, hand-held with 60mm macro lens. It's funny how things come together (in my mind anyway!). Last night I was sat listening to the much-missed Irish blues guitarist Rory Gallagher, and in particular the song 'A Million Miles Away'. Today I took the dogs out and passed a clump of thistles which I had been waiting for to go to seed, to see if I could get some seed head close ups. I got this shot, and then needed a title... Well i'm a million miles away I'm a million miles away Sailing like a driftwood On a windy bay I'm standing on the landing And there's no one there but me That's where you'll see me Looking out on the deep blue sea Well i'm a million miles I'm a million miles i'm a million miles Sailing like a driftwood on a windy bay oh oh yeah Rory Gallagher live 1974 I love the story about someone who asked Jimi Hendrix what it was like to be considered the best guitarist in the world, and he reportedly replied I don't know ask Rory Gallagher

The Co-operative Group formed gradually over 140 years from the merger of many independent retail societies, changing from a purely wholesale operation to a major retailer in its own right. In 1863, the North of England Co-operative Wholesale Industrial and Provident Society Limited was launched by 300 individual co-operatives across Yorkshire and Lancashire. By 1872, it had become known as the Co-operative Wholesale Society (CWS). Throughout the 20th century, smaller societies merged with CWS, including the Scottish Co-operative Wholesale Society (SCWS) in 1973 and the London-based South Suburban Co-operative Society in 1984. - Wikipedia Quite often the Co-op buildings were located in converted terraced houses, and served the local community. The above example is an end-terrace (which is now occupied by a launderette, or 'wash house' as it is known locally), and is just round the corner from me.

Burnley Embankment - Tesco
Made by mijoli
Almost a mile long, the Burnley Embankment, known locally as the Straight Mile, carries the Leeds & Liverpool Canal across the rivers Brun and Calder 20m above the centre of Burnley. Designed by Robert Whitworth, it meant the valley could be traversed without the need for two systems of locks or a long detour following the contours of the land. It was built between 1796 and 1801. Of all choices made by Robert Aickman for inclusion in his list of the Wonders of the Waterways, the Burnley Embankment is probably the most controversial. Whilst clearly not as dramatic as some of the other Wonders, it is still a huge and impressive structure, particularly when its manner of construction is taken into account. Not a great fan of Tesco, I have included this picture to try and show the height of the embankment against a superstore. Part of my collection.

Norman, guardian of the old grammar school
Made by Jaxpix50
This little chap sits at the front door of the building. He became a sort of mascot for us all and we named him after a very dear member of staff ' Norman'. The original Norman was the head of our department and a great union man. He died a few years ago and I can never walk past this building without thinking of him. I was lucky enough to teach in this beautiful old school for 17 years. It was built in 1873 but the grammar school dates from much earlier. It is a wonderful building and now has a preservation order on it so will be kept and maintained as a piece of history. today I had to meet a colleague in there and was astounded how easy it was just to step back in time.

Tulip

A Flower... A flower has power, remember the sixties, its all about love, just ask the pixies, a flower is strength, and beauty too, with such pure colour, fragrance and hue, yet stands up to all the elements, just like you, and a flower reminds me of love, with grace and purity, like a dove, a flower is power, to stand alone, or be with many and still feel at home , it sweetens any garden, whether old or new and everyday God waters it with the morning dew, so remember a flower is Gods way of smiling, of telling you everything`s fine, to let you know you are shining, and that everything is in line.

St Peter's Church, Burnley, Lancs.
Made by Gaz Sutherland
Enclosed on three sides by a deep meander of the River Brun, the ancient Parish Church of St. Peter, which was first mentioned in 1122, marks the original centre of the town when it was nothing more than a medieval village. The small heritage centre in the church gives a fascinating insight into the history of Burnley and of the church. Listen out for the 10 church bells as their clear notes peal out across the town, they are thought to be amongst the best in the country. The church also holds regular concerts once a fortnight throughout the year.

DSC_0050- Fireweed buds
Made by SWJuk
Fireweed (Rosebay Willowherb) In Britain the plant was considered a rare species in the 18th century, and one confined to a few locations with damp, gravelly soils. It was mis-identified as Great Hairy Willowherb in contemporary floras. The plant's rise from local rarity to widespread weed seems to have occurred at the same time as the expansion of the railway network, and the associated soil disturbance. The plant became locally known as bombweed due to its rapid colonization of bomb craters in the second world war - Wikipedia

The Bridie Bear narrowboat (a hire boat from Bolton), making it's way back through the leafy suburbs(?) of Burnley. There was a chap videoing this - he kept running up the towpath and then turning to film the boat coming towards him (until George growled at him and nearly took a chunk out of his trousers). I thought at first he was somehow connected to the boatees, but noticing their looks of bemusement, apparently not. Perhaps 'barge-spotting' is the new Xbox?

Hanging outside the Spar
Made by andreasandrews
These youths are both 12 years old. After hanging around outside the Spar they ventured to another local off licence with no apparent purpose in their loitering. Asking people for money, and complaining that they have nothing to do one of them says It's boring, sometimes there are 30 of us dossing out on the streets with nothing to do. The father of one of the youths says They're only 12. Imagine what they will be like an a couple of years

New to Bus Eireann, Irish Republic as 00-D-89235. Now with Pennine, Skipton, which is steadily updating its fleet with low floor vehicles. This old established independent firm is embroiled unwillingly in a 'competition' for passengers with Transdev on the Skipton-Burnley corridor, and the management of Pennine has appealed to locals for support. Ex Northern Blue Scania B224YUH waits behind.
