Pelikanen (Pelecanidae) zijn een familie van watervogels die bekend zijn door hun opvallende uiterlijk, hun grootte en hun gedrag. Pelikanen kunnen tot 14 kg zwaar worden. Ze worden tot 1,80 meter lang en kunnen een spanwijdte van 3 meter hebben en een leeftijd van 35 jaar bereiken. De beide Euraziatische soorten (de roze pelikaan en de kroeskoppelikaan) behoren tot de grootste vliegende vogels. Pelikanen zijn piscivoor; hun voedsel bestaat uit vis. Een groep pelikanen jaagt gezamenlijk. Door uitbundig vleugelgeklapper wordt een school vis naar ondiep water gedreven. Pelikanen hebben een grote snavel en een grote keelzak (tussen de onderkant van de snavel en de keel). Als een pelikaan een prooi ziet schept hij de vissen uit het water. Als hij zijn hoofd optilt gaat het water weg en blijf de vis achter. Ook naast de gezamenlijke jacht zijn pelikanen sociale vogels. Ze broeden in kolonies, waar ze dicht op elkaar zitten. In gevangenschap komen ze pas tot broeden als ze minstens met z'n achten zijn. Pelikanen golden in het vroege christendom als symbool van opofferende moederliefde. Moederpelikanen werden afgebeeld met een door henzelf opengepikte borst, waardoor de jongen met bloed gevoed konden worden. Zie ook 'Symboliek'. Pelicans are large birds with enormous, pouched bills. The smallest is the Brown Pelican (P. occidentalis), small individuals of which can be as little as 2.75 kg (6 lb), 106 cm (42 in) long and can have a wingspan of as little as 1.83 m (6 ft). The largest is believed to be the Dalmatian Pelican (P. crispus), at up to 15 kg (33 lb), 183 cm (72 in) long, with a maximum wingspan of nearly 3.5 m (11.5 ft). The Australian Pelican has the longest bill of any bird[1]. Pelicans swim well with their short, strong legs and their feet with all four toes webbed (as in all birds placed in the order Pelecaniformes). The tail is short and square, with 20 to 24 feathers. The wings are long and have the unusually large number of 30 to 35 secondary flight feathers. A layer of special fibers deep in the breast muscles can hold the wings rigidly horizontal for gliding and soaring. Thus they can exploit thermals to commute over 150 km (100 miles) to feeding areas.[1] Pelicans rub the backs of their heads on their preen glands to pick up its oily secretion, which they transfer to their plumage to waterproof it.

Koningsgier (Sarcoramphus papa) is een gier van de Nieuwe Wereld. De vogel heeft een lengte van 71 tot 85 cm, een vleugelspanwijdte van 180 tot 200 cm en een gewicht van 3 tot 4,5 kg. De opvallend gekleurde koningsgier is de grootste tropische soort. Zijn krachtige snavel is rood met zwart en bevat een roodgele vlezige kam. De kop is rood, oranje, grijs en zwart. De ogen zijn omgeven door een rode kring. De rest van het lichaam grijs of grijsbruin van kleur. De variaties in het kleurrijke gezicht tonen leeftijd, status en gezondheid aan soortgenoten. De kale krop, bedoeld om tijdelijk voedsel in op te slaan, speelt een belangrijke rol bij de balst. De vleugels zijn zeer breed en de brede staart is relatief klein. Er bestaat geen verschil in uiterlijk en grootte tussen de twee geslachten bij de koningsgier. The King Vulture, Sarcoramphus papa, is a large Central and South American bird in the New World vulture family Cathartidae. This vulture lives predominantly in tropical lowland forests stretching from southern Mexico to northern Argentina, though some believe that William Bartram's Painted Vulture of Florida may be of this species. It is the only surviving member of the genus Sarcoramphus, though fossil members are known. It is large and predominantly white, with gray to black ruff, flight, and tail feathers. Its head and neck are bald, with the skin color varying, including yellow, orange, blue, purple, and red. The King Vulture has a very noticeable yellow fleshy caruncle on its beak. This vulture is a scavenger and it often makes the initial cut into a fresh carcass. It also displaces smaller New World Vulture species from a carcass. King Vultures have been known to live for up to 30 years in captivity. King Vultures were popular figures in the Mayan codices as well as in local folklore and medicine. Though currently listed as Least Concern by the IUCN, they are declining in number, due primarily to habitat loss.

Het zijn echte voedselspecialisten die met een bijzonder filtermechanisme in hun snavel klein voedsel uit het water weten te filteren. Zij leven veelal rond zoutmeren, waar zij vaak het rijk alleen hebben. Het voedsel van flamingo's verschilt van soort tot soort. Grotere flamingo's eten meestal kreeftachtigen, schelpdieren en wormen terwijl de kleinere flamingo's vooral microscopisch kleine algen eten. Flamingo's hebben een lengte van 140 tot 175 centimeter, inclusief kop en de nek. Zoals bij veel andere dieren, zijn de mannetjes flamingo,s groter dan de vrouwtjes. De ogen zijn klein en hebben een lichtgele kleur. Flamingos filter-feed on brine shrimp. Their oddly-shaped beaks are specially adapted to separate mud and silt from the food they eat, and are uniquely used upside-down. The filtering of food items is assisted by hairy structures called lamellae which line the mandibles, and the large rough-surfaced tongue. The flamingo's characteristic pink colouring is caused by the Beta carotene in their diet. The source of this varies by species, but shrimp and blue-green algae are common sources; zoo-fed flamingos may be given food with the additive canthaxanthin, which is often also given to farmed salmon.Flamingos produce a milk like pigeon milk due to the action of a hormone called prolactin (see Columbidae). It contains more fat and less protein than the latter does, and it is produced in glands lining the whole of the upper digestive tract, not just the crop. Both parents nurse their chick, and young flamingos feed on this milk, which also contains red and white blood cells, for about two months until their bills are developed enough to filter feed.

Gisteren deelgenomen aan het seminar slimmer werken 20 van Creaforti uit Arnhem. Het NOMA is normaal gesproken tot 1700 uur open, dus ik kon na afloop, om kwart over 6, zonder publiek dat door mijn beeld zou lopen nog even een paar foto's maken......helaas was de lucht niet echt hiephiephoera, maar hier brak net even de zon door, (het regende) en dat licht viel precies mooi op deze Zaanse Paltrokmolen.........meer over deze molen en het NOMA hier: www.openluchtmuseum.nl/objects/oid/12 Exposure 0.005 sec (1/200) Aperture f/13.0 Focal Length 15 mm ISO Speed 100 Exposure Bias -2/3 EV Lightroom bewerking: voorinstelling Petruzzo B&W Brown/Red Antique 2..added some vignette en camnera profiel EF-S 15-85 toegepast....

......terwijl het regende brak de zon door.....een van de meest gefotografeerde stekkies van het Nederlands Openlucht Museum, de ophaalbrug. Deze vormt de toegang tot de gezellige Zaanse buurt..... lees meer op de website van het openlucht Museum.......iedereen moest betalen als men onder de brug door wilde (schippers) maar ook de voetgangers, hier komt het gezegde 'Over de Brug Komen' vandaan....
