Protection Teachers

Protection Teachers
Made by Julien Harneis
The man on the right is the head of the parents committee. UNICEF trains selected parents committees on good governance of schools. They are normally required to sign on the waybills of incoming goods, as is one student representative, along with the head teacher. The two men in the middle are Jonas and Kisembo teachers of class 5 and 6. Both went through a week long UNICEF training on how to incorporate child soldiers into their classes. This is programme is designed to extend our support for the children after their time in the Transition Centers. Jonas had 2 such children and Kisembo 3. They both found the training useful and appropriate. According to the teachers and the director the children seem to have settled well into the classes, are doing well and have forgotten their time in the armed groups. UNICEF has signed a contract with the school whereby we provide funds for the school and in return the school accepts 30 vulnerable children to be educated for free. Normally parents pay $1 ‘collation’ per month to cover school running costs. 14 children are orphans and 16 were child soldiers. The director and the committee decided to use the funds to buy furniture for the school. On the left is Katya our very dynamic Education officer who unfortunately for us is moving on to UNICEF Indonesia.

UNICEF funds Solidarites to rehabilitate schools in the district of Ituri. For this school they constructed 5 buildings and renovated one structure. The construction is using cement, imported from Uganda at $ 14 dollars a bag. Sandra is interested in exploring the use of earth, as this is the usual local material. This would make maintenance more accessible to the school.

No uniform, no class

No uniform, no class

There were about a dozen children not in uniform hanging around the classes. When asked, the teachers explained that as they did not have uniforms they were too embarrassed to go into class. Although we emphasized that education was more important than whether or not you have the right clothes they would still not join the classes.

Aiming for parity

Aiming for parity

The school has 515 boys and 334 girls. UNICEFs objective is to reach parity. The director told us that the enrollment of girls was improving as a result of the socialization campaigns carried out by the Education Department and UNICEF. This year 105 girls enrolled in the first year out of 230 first year students.
