Buenos Aires is the capital of Argentina and its largest city and port. It is located on the southern shore of the Río de la Plata, on the southeastern coast of the South American continent.

If you are a fan of walking in open green spaces and parks in big cities like Buenos Aires, be sure not to miss a promenade in Palermo, a beautiful area in the eastern part of the city. Here you will not only find open spaces to walk in, but a large lake where you can rent paddle boats and an immense flower garden with free entry!

Another great place to walk along and experience street life in a safe area (during the day only, folks - interesting characters emerge here at night!) is .

The National Immigration Museum is not open on the weekends like says. Use the Retiro .

has the pedestrian street with arts and crafts. There is also a river cruise you can take from there. There is a huge metal structure across the river which is picturesque. Tango dancers are in the cobblestone streets. You may try to catch a rowboat to Avellaneda on the other side of the water for 0.50 pesos , but the rower may not allow you to if you are a tourist, citing it's dangerous . There is no subte to La Boca, but many buses go there. In addition to tango, La Boca is famous for its football, and you may also take a tour of the La Bombonera Stadium. The buildings are painted in bright colors. You can also take pictures with you and a tango dancer for a small price! But if you want a true tango experience that is not put on a sliver platter for a European or American tourist, read below and experience the true Buenos Aires Tango experience.

The prices for most everything in La Boca is 2 to 3 times what it is in the rest of the city. It's been over tourist-ified, but is enjoyable if you just feel like being a tourist. Don't even think about coming here at night. It's safe during daytime in the Caminito neighborhood.

The Cementerio de la Recoleta: This is where all the rich families in Buenos Aires go to be buried. Be sure to visit the grave of Eva Perón (who, despite having the most visited tomb in the cemetery, is considered by many of the Buenos Aires aristocracy to be too "low class" for eternal interment in Recoleta.)

The Palermo Viejo district: This is a trendy neighborhood with charming cobblestone streets, bookstores, bars and boutiques; definitely better than the touristic San Telmo area for a nightime excursion. The station is the closest metro stop.

Le Tango de le Muerte

Le Tango de le Muerte

I am still here in Argentina, although the photo below is from last week in Buenos Aires. If any of you watch Lost, then you will be familiar with my flashback and flashforward style of description. I know some of you were waiting to hear more about the backpacking adventure, but I'll sprinkle that stuff in over the next 6 months or so, interlaced with other various plots (again, like Lost). Also, like Lost, many of my stories have no endings. As for this one, the five Russians and I went to one of the oldest Tango dinner expositions in the city. Argentina is famous for the tango and swarthy Argentinian men who perform it. This is the famous dance hall of Homero Manzi, who is apparently some kind of a legend, according the little video they put up before the dance. The video was of very low quality, which made me think it was either very old or made by a college student. The dinner consisted of a variety of meats and wines and tango dances and music. It was quite a show. The whole thing was scripted like an old 1960's style dinner theater with all sorts of staged scenes and dramatic dances. These sorts of things are always extremely difficult to photograph. It's very dark. There's a lot of movement, and it's tough to figure out the ideal setup. I clambered up to where the supplies are stored and set up for this shot. You can actually see Yuri somewhere in this photo... I won't say where. Although I can assure you he is not one of the swarthy Argentinian dancers. Furthermore, this was shot with a wide-angle lens, so objects such as Yuri may be larger than they appear. from the blog at www.stuckincustoms.com

Caminito, La Boca

Caminito, La Boca
Made by Thad Roan - Bridgepix
Tango dancers taking a break on Caminito (Main Street), La Boca. La Boca is a neighborhood, or barrio of the Argentine capital, Buenos Aires. It retains a strong European flavour, with many of its early settlers being from the Italian city of Genoa. In fact the name has a strong assonance with the genoese neighborhood of Boccadasse (or Bocadaze in genoese dialect), and some people believe that the Buenos Aires' barrio was indeed named after it. After a lengthy general strike, La Boca seceded from Argentina in 1882, and the rebels raised the Genoese flag, which was immediately torn down personally by then President Julio Argentino Roca. It is known throughout the sporting world as the home of Boca Juniors, one of South America's top football clubs. La Boca is a popular destination for tourists visiting Argentina, with its colourful houses and main street, the Caminito. Other attractions include the La Ribera theatre, many tango clubs and Italian taverns, as well as La Bombonera, home of Boca Juniors. It has also been a centre for radical politics, having elected the first socialist member of Argentine Congress (Alfredo Palacios in 1935) and been home to many demonstrations during the crisis of 2001. As one of Buenos Aires's 47 barrios, La Boca is located in the city's south-east near its port. The barrio of Barracas is to the west; San Telmo and Puerto Madero are to the north. (Wikipedia)

For fine-art prints please visit my website or email me at prints@jimboud.com Your comments and feedback are greatly appreciated! Please do not post large images/banners or invitations to award groups. ****************************************************************** This shot was taken in Puerto Madero, Buenos Aires. I took this shot after the sun had set during the blue hour. I used a 60 second exposure to get the most out of the remaining light, and to smooth out the reflections on the water. In this shot you can see the ARA Presidente Sarmiento. From Wikipedia: ARA Presidente Sarmiento is a museum ship, originally built as a training ship for the Argentine Navy. She is considered to be the last intact cruising training ship from the 1890s.The ship was originally built for the Argentine naval academy. The ARA Presidente Sarmiento made thirty seven annual training cruises including six circumnavigations of the globe. The ship was retired as a seagoing vessel in 1938, but continued to serve as a stationary training ship until 1961. She is now maintained in her original 1898 appearance as a museum ship near the center of Buenos Aires. This ship was named for Domingo Faustino Sarmiento, the seventh President of Argentina. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Puente de la Mujer, Buenos Aires, Argentina
Made by Thad Roan - Bridgepix
HDR image reprocessed from a photo taken in January, 2008 of the Puente de la Mujer, Buenos Aires, Argentina. Additional Bridge Photos and a Bridge Blog at www.Bridgepix.com. The Puente de la Mujer is a footbridge in the Puerto Madero barrio of Buenos Aires, Argentina that spans dique 3 (dock 3). It is of the Cantilever spar cable-stayed bridge type and is also a swing bridge, but somewhat unique in is asymmetrical arrangement. It has a single mast with cables suspending a portion of the bridge which rotates 90 degrees in order to allow water traffic to pass. When it swings to allow watercraft passage the far end comes to a resting point on a stabilizing pylon. It was designed by Santiago Calatrava and is similar to his Puente del Alamillo and Sundial Bridge at Turtle Bay, but with a forward, rather than a reverse angled cantilever, as is seen in those bridges. The footbridge was donated by Don Alberto L. Gonzalez to the City of Buenos Aires in thanks for 60 years of work in the country. Started in 1998, it was completed on 20 December 2001. (Wikipedia)

I didn’t have a lot of sunny day in Argentina unfortunately, but then again: there aren’t a lot of photos a La Boca on a grey day so I guess that makes it a little special. It is known among sports fans for La Bombonera the home of Boca Juniors and the club of Diego Maradona. Y ahora... ¡nieve en Buenos Aires!

Y ahora... ¡nieve en Buenos Aires!
Made by walrusjuice
