This floating fern lives in a symbiosis with cyanobacteria that provide extra nitrogen for the freshwater environment. In traditional rice paddy ecology the cyanobacteria act as a natural fertilizer and also encourage the growth of invertebrates that are eaten by small fish. The predator fish that eat the small ones are eaten by rice farmers as an important protein component of their diet.
