The flower carpet

The flower carpet
Made by sigfus.sigmundsson
Every two years, the Grand Place in Brussels is covered with an amazing flower carpet which consists of about 700.000 flowers. This summer, the magnificent design of its flower carpet has drawn inspiration from 18th century French patterns. I took this picture last Friday. The actual making of the carpet is based on a plan worked out in advance, consisting of several stages. Everything starts, often a year in advance, with projects and scale models, illustrating a commissioned theme (such as the commemoration of great events, or the arms and shield of a town, and sometimes the proposals of local horticultural associations). Once the theme has been produced in representation and symbol, the number of flowers and color combinations calculated and the outlines finally drawn on the ground, then the work starts. The skilful, dedicated work of a hundred experienced gardeners and their enthusiasm enables them to put together this giant floral jigsaw in under four hours. The day before, the spaces between the floral patterns will already have been filled with rolled turf. Did you know - that the flowers are packed together one by one, 300 to every square meter of the ground, (+/- 700.000 flowers!) so tightly (no soil is used at all) that they won't be blown away by the first puff of wind, and create their own microclimate? In heat waves, the turf has to be watered to prevent it from shrinking, but if the weather is too wet, the grass can grow 4 to 5 centimeters in 3 days? The wonders of nature! The Fly

The Fly
Made by just.Luc
Oh, baby child... It's no secret that the stars are falling from the sky It's no secret that our world is in darkness tonight They say the sun is sometimes eclipsed by a moon You know I don't see you when she walks in the room It's no secret that a friend is someone who lets you help It's no secret that a liar won't believe anyone else They say a secret is something you tell one other person So I'm telling you, child Love...we shine like a Burning star We're falling from the sky Tonight A man will beg A man will crawl On the sheer face of love Like a fly on a wall It's no secret at all It's no secret that a conscience can sometimes be a pest It's no secret ambition bites the nails of success Every artist is a cannibal, every poet is a thief All kill their inspiration and sing about their grief Over love... we shine like a Burning star We're falling from the sky Tonight A man will rise A man will fall From the sheer face of love Like a fly from a wall It's no secret at all Love...we shine like a Burning star We're falling from the sky Tonight A man will rise A man will fall From the sheer face of love Like a fly from a wall It's no secret at all Oh, yeah! It's no secret that the stars are falling from the sky The universe exploded 'cause of one man's lie Look, I gotta go, yeah I'm running outta change There's a lot of things if I could I'd rearrange (The Fly - U2) Street Art - Brussels - Kandelaarsstraat - Rue des Chandeliers

Sunrise above the inner circular runway of Brussels

Sunrise above the inner circular runway of Brussels
Made by Erroba (slowly recovering from illness)
. About View on the rushing traffic early in the morning on the inner ring of Brussels. The Shot I pass this point every day when I'm walking to work, the morning before I noticed that the sunrise was throwing beautiful orange light on the buildings so I decided to bring my camera and tripod the next day. The traffic is rushing in and out a tunnel and I'm standing above it, I wanted to show how busy the traffic is here. There was already plenty of light and even with the diaphragm set to f32, the exposure time was too short to be able to catch those light stripes, so I screwed on the polarizer to block some more light, this made the longest of the 3 exposures to go up to 5 seconds, so that was ok. Photoshop I did a lot of touching up on this shot, there were artifacts due to the 3 different exposures and the moving traffic, especially in the white stripes on the left, so I manually painted some extra white in, using my Wacom tablet, which is an unmissable tool for such things. The trees were too dark in comparison to the rest so I used Brightness/Contrast and masked everything but the trees out. I also changed the saturation in 3 different steps, using a mask to only apply the saturation on certain areas. You All comments, criticism and tips for improvements are ( as always ) welcome.

Interior of the 'Kappellekerk', Brussels - Belgium

Interior of the 'Kappellekerk', Brussels - Belgium
Made by Erroba (slowly recovering from illness)
Best viewed in LARGE. . About This is the interior of the church known as Kapellekerk. The shot Standard 3 exposures HDR [-2..0..+2EV] in RAW at AV f/11 on a tripod using the Sigma 10mm fisheye lens and a remote. I'm actually betting on it that the fisheye is much better for certain interior shots such as this than a normal wide angle lens which gives a strong perspective distortion, where here the slightly bended walls actually add a sense of space to the place. I've shot this on a sunny day at around 12 o'clock during my lunch break, so I was sure to have lovely light coming through the windows. Photoshop Curves and a bit saturation. Some extra dodging of the ribs and the light on the floor. Remove a distracting spot of blue on the floor. Added some extra light on the windows by copying the most contrasting channel into a layer, boosting the contrast of it using levels ( ctrl-L ), removing any unwanted parts from that and finally performing a radial blur with the source set to the position where the light is supposed to come from. Train station 'Kapellekerk', Brussels - Belgium

. About This is, believe it or not, the entrance of a train station, you have to go left in the middle of the corridor, another amazing set of graffiti, which I was unable to shoot due to a cleaning lady; and then stairs yet again full of graffiti lead you to the platform. The shot Standard 3 exposures HDR on a tripod using the Sigma 10mm fisheye lens and a remote control. Photoshop Not much, really, a bit of extra brightness, a touch saturation and a bit of dodging of the highlights and an unsharp filter. You All comments, criticism and tips for improvements are ( as always ) welcome. Music If you like a real good rock song, do yourself a favor a listen/watch this, besides being an awesome rock song, it's also the most thrilling music video I have ever seen ( be sure to sit through the short intro ) : Champagne! - Millionaire [CD:Outside the Simian Flock]

Could I ever explain this feeling of love? It just lingers on The fear in my heart that keeps telling me Which way to turn We'll wander again Our clothes they are wet We shy from the rain Longing to touch all the places we know we can hide The width of a room that can hold so much pleasure inside Here am I alone again A quiet town where life gives in Here am I just wondering Nightporters go Nightporters slip away I'll watch for a sign And if I should ever again cross your mind I'll sit my room and wait until nightlife begins And catching my breath, we'll both brave the weather again Here am I alone again The quiet town where life gives in Here am I just wondering Nightporters go Nightporters slip away Nightporter by Japan

Interior of the St-Michiels Cathedral, Brussels

Interior of the St-Michiels Cathedral, Brussels
Made by Erroba (slowly recovering from illness)
Just before I got to work, in the centre of Brussels, I sneaked into the the Sint Michiels Cathedral - no one there - time to set up my tripod in the lowest position, lie on the ground and take two HDR shots, one horizontally and one vertically. When I stiched them together they almost had the shape like above so instead of getting rid of that I tried to emphasize on that special shape and put a frame around it. There are some ghosting artifacts that turned up in the stitching process, never had that before, I guess that autostitch has problems stitching wide angle shots ( these were taken with the Sigma 10-20mm lens ). But why not have ghosts in a church, right ? Please don't start any religious debate here, there are other places for that. Portrait Of The Unknown Saxophonist

Portrait Of The Unknown Saxophonist

September 12th, 2008 - Brussels, Belgium This man was playing near the royal park in the centre of Brussels on a Friday afternoon as commuters made their way home. To be honest his look was better than his sound, though I always find something admirable in those artists, particularly musicians, who force themselves to go out and perform in public when they know they're not really up to it. This photograph was used on July 27th, 2009 to illustrate an article entitled Who's your favourite undiscovered photographer ? on the photography blog Epic Edits. There are some great links suggested by commenters, well worth checking out. Please click here to view on black.

Orange

Orange

One of the great things about Brussels is the culture and art which I find thriwing in the city. You walk a certain street and suddenly there is a new artwork there that wasn´t there last time you were there. I was walking towards downtown the other day when I saw this new artwork. What an original idea (or should I say orange idea;)).... For those who don´t know, this is an artwork of Arne Quinze, called The Sequence, you can read all about it here: www.thesequence.be/SEQUENCE_BLOG/index.html And you can read all about the artist here: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Arne_Quinze

Normal 3 exposure Hdr. Photoshop Just a tiny 'Curves' and a bit of extra saturation (+8), a little unsharp mask, no cropping or anything else. Looking Up

Becks looking up at the fireworks going off around the edge of the Grande Place in Brussels at the new year. As some people have pointed out the main fireworks were cancelled this year due to a terrorist threat, which was a real shame. Becks is actually looking at fireworks being launched by members of the public from around the edge, where there was less police. 05-01-2007: Thankyou flickrBlog for featuring this picture in your new years round up. It's Not Only Rock 'n' Roll, Baby !

It's Not Only Rock 'n' Roll, Baby !

September 12th, 2008 - Brussels, Belgium Not that I needed reminding of the fact. I thought about cropping this to include just the books and the pinstriped gentleman's head (see the note above). Of course, if this had been taken in the City of London and not outside the Bo Zar museum in Brussels, he might have been wearing a bowler hat (chapeau melon), and the juxtaposition would have been that much more comical... I always loved this house/building, at a street corner. Although I don't know him/her, I like the person who came up with the idea to do it this way, and the ones who paid for it, and the actual realisators. Great experience to discover a house like this suddenly in the city! Like an unexpected gift! :-D Imagination spices up our daily lives! --- Brussels, along the Canal, near VlaamsePoort/Porte de Flandre. --- U can check here for other of my pictures.
