About A recent trip out with friends, scouting and what not. I love how the rain can bee seen coming in over the sea, makes for really neat colours at dawn. I always head out even if it looks wet. I've been going through my NZ music collection lately, and I've always loved The Exponents. See below for more info. Enjoy. - Canon 50D. - ISO 100, f9, 1/200, 145mm. - Canon 70-200 f/4 L lens. Processing - Saturation. - Soft light layer in Photoshop 6.0. About The Exponents The Exponents are a New Zealand rock group. They formed in 1981 as the Dance Exponents, after vocalist Jordan Luck and guitarist Brian Jones disbanded their first group, Basement, and relocated from the South Canterbury town of Timaru to Christchurch. The other founding members were David (Chalkie) Gent (bass), Steve (Fingers) Cowan (guitar) and Michael (Harry) Harralambi (drums). A residency at Christchurch's Aranui Tavern quickly earned them a strong reputation, and they were signed by Mushroom Records in 1982. Cowan subsequently died as a result of a pre-existing medical condition. Some time later, Chris Sheehan joined the band on guitar. After releasing two albums in New Zealand, the band moved to Britain in 1987, where they were a popular draw for expatriate New Zealanders (and sometimes Australians and South Africans) and attracted A&R interest, but did not gain a record contract. They eventually returned to New Zealand and in dropped the Dance from their name in 1991, registering a shift in their style of music. The group has always been based around the writing (and on stage antics) of mainstay Jordan Luck. Along with the above, members have included Bryan Bell, Mark Bell, Martin Morris and David Barraclough. Their major hits, including Why Does Love Do This To Me, Who Loves Who The Most, Victoria, I'll Say Goodbye (Even Tho' I'm Blue) and Whatever Happened To Tracy have been taken up by successive generations of younger New Zealanders some, with social commentators going so far as to say that an Exponents concert forms a rite of passage for New Zealand youth. The band continued to tour New Zealand occasionally until 2006, often playing provincial towns as well as main centres, but Luck now tours with his own band, Luck, playing Exponents songs and new compositions. They reportedly once decided to tour every New Zealand town with a KFC, not due to their love of chicken, but because they trusted KFC's market research and reasoned these towns must contain enough youth to fill up their gigs. The Exponents have opened for acts such as The Rolling Stones, KISS and David Bowie on their respective New Zealand tours. Visit The Exponents MySpace page here.

Parish of the Vladimir Icon of the Mother of God

Parish of the Vladimir Icon of the Mother of God
Made by WilliamBullimore
From the Russian Orthodox Queensland website: It was there (Persia), that Evphimiy Shishkoff, while facing certain death at the hands of Persian revolutionaries, found himself praying to the Mother of God for Her intercessions, so that she might appeal to Her Holy Son, the Lord Jesus Christ that Evphimy and his family might be saved from their impending deaths. It is the Orthodox custom to utilize Holy Icons as an aid to prayer, and it so happens that Evphimiy had been praying to a copy of a very old Russian Orthodox icon known as the Vladimir Icon of the Mother of God (named for the city of Vladimir, and believed by devout Russians to be miraculous, having been instrumental in several miraculous historical events.) As he prayed before the famous icon of the Mother of God, Evphimiy made a promise that if, by some incredible miracle, they were to be survive, then he would build a church in honour of the icon before which he was praying. Thus it was that against all odds, the Shishkoff family was somehow overlooked by the militants who sought to kill all foreigners, and managed to migrate to Australia, where they settled in the city of Brisbane, and where he began to earnestly make good on his promise. By 1956, he and his son had purchased a large block of land in the Brisbane suburb of Rocklea, and with their own hands, in their spare time, constructed the original wood and fibro Church building which still stands on our parish grounds. The Church was dedicated to the Vladimir Icon of the Mother of God by Bishop Savva (Raevskiy). The Courier-Mail newspaper published an article about the consecration of the Church. It must have been a big deal for the local Australian community, because the Brisbane City Council even went so far as to run a special bus service to the consecration ceremony... More Russian migrants came to Australia throughout the 1960's. They came here with next to nothing and wanted nothing more than to be free from religious and political persecution. The parish grew steadily until it outgrew its original temple, and it was decided to build a larger Church that would adequately accommodate the parish. Thus, planning and construction began in the 1980s and the Church was consecrated in the 1990s. The new Church building is still incomplete, and numerous works are being undertaken by the current parishioners, including gilding of various parts of the interior, reconstruction of the temporary decoration on the cupolas (ie onion domes), and other works.

All Saints Anglican Church

All Saints Anglican Church
Made by William Bullimore
From Wikipedia: All Saints Anglican Church, Wickham Terrace, Brisbane is the oldest Anglican Church in the City of Brisbane, first founded in 1862. The existing structure dates from 1869. For most of its history, it has been identified with the High Church or Anglo-Catholic tradition within Anglicanism. The present church, was opened for worship on the Birthday of the Blessed Virgin Mary, 8 September 1869, although some alterations were still taking place into the early 1870s. Its style is nineteenth century Gothic Revival, with buttressed walls of rough faced rubble, porphyry and sandstone, and a metal clad roof. The interior has a fine example of a hammer-beam ceiling, which is rare in Australia. All Saints' Church has played a significant part in the story of Brisbane's development into a city of culture and significance. Well-known identities who worshipped at All Saints' in the nineteenth century included Sir Robert Ramsey Mackenzie, Sir James Dickson, (both of whom served as Premiers of Queensland, the latter becoming Minister of defence in the first Commonwealth Government), Mrs Mary Peattie, and the Hon. John Douglas. To this day, All Saints' is regarded by many as the Parish Church of the City of Brisbane. It contains the oldest stained glass in Queensland as well as other significant art works, such as the first public work of the acclaimed Brisbane sculptor, Daphne Mayo (the 14 Stations of the Cross). St John's Cathedral

St John's Cathedral
Made by William Bullimore
From Wikipedia: St John's Cathedral is the Anglican cathedral of Brisbane and the metropolitan cathedral of the ecclesiastical province of Queensland, Australia. The cathedral is situated on the outskirts of the city centre and is the successor to an earlier pro-cathedral on William Street in the heart of the central business district which was predated by All Saints Wickham Terrace (1862), the oldest Anglican church in Brisbane. The cathedral possesses a four manual pipe organ, the largest cathedral organ in Australia, which hosts many recitalists from across the world: Pearson's design (and stone-vaulting) creates a five-second reverberation making organ-music particularly resonant. St John's Cathedral is unique in Australia as the completion of the building design was achieved through collaboration between clergy, stonemasons and architects over a period of almost 100 years, as with Romanesque and Gothic cathedrals in the Middle Ages and, more recently, 20th century cathedrals such as Liverpool Cathedral in England, St John the Divine in New York and Washington National Cathedral in Washington DC. It is also the only Victorian Gothic cathedral under construction in Australia. About the 777 200ER The Boeing 777 is a long-range, wide-body twin-engine airliner manufactured by Boeing Commercial Airplanes. The world's largest twinjet and commonly referred to as the Triple Seven, the aircraft can carry between 283 and 368 passengers in a three-class configuration, and has a range from 5,235 to 9,380 nautical miles (9,695 to 17,370 km). Distinguishing features of the 777 include the six wheels on each main landing gear, its circular fuselage cross-section, the largest diameter turbofan engines of any aircraft, and the blade-like end to the tail cone. Designed to bridge the capacity difference between the 767 and 747, the Boeing 777 is produced in two fuselage lengths. The original 777-200 model first entered service in 1995, and the stretched 777-300, which is 33.3 ft (10.1 m) longer, was introduced in 1998. The longer-range 777-200LR and 777-300ER variants entered service in 2006 and 2004, respectively, while a freighter version, the 777F, first flew in 2008. Both long range 777 models and the 777F are equipped with GE90 engines, wingtip extensions of 12.8 ft (3.9 m), and raked wingtips. The 777-200LR is currently the world's longest-range airliner, and holds the record for longest distance flown by an unrefueled commercial airliner.

About [ ] I often see the little things, and is because the Sigma 10-20 lens has made me think about what to exclude in a photo rather than include. This shot was taken at almost 200mm on my Canon 70-200 f/4 L, but I was still very happy with the comp and what I could get in my frame, or rater what I could exclude by using a longer focal length. About Mangroves! Mangroves are trees and shrubs that grow in saline coastal habitats in the tropics and subtropics. The saline conditions tolerated by various species range from brackish water, through pure seawater (30 to 40 ppt), to water of over twice the salinity of ocean seawater, where the salt has become concentrated by evaporation. Australia has approximately 11,500 km2 of mangroves primarily on the northern and eastern coasts of the continent, with occurrences as far south as Millers Landing in Wilsons Promontory, Victoria, and Barker Inlet in Adelaide, South Australia. New Zealand also has mangrove forests extending to around 38°S (similar to Australia's southernmost mangrove incidence): the furthest geographical extent on the west coast is Raglan Harbour (37°48′S); on the east coast, Ohiwa Harbour (near Opotiki) is the furthest south that mangroves are found.

It has also come to refer to a wide-angle representation of such a view whether in painting, drawing, photography, film/video, or a three-dimensional model. Further, the motion-picture term, pan or panning, is derived from panorama. The word was originally coined by the Irish painter Robert Barker to describe his panoramic paintings of Edinburgh, shown on a cylindrical surface and viewed from the inside, they were exhibited in London in 1792 as The Panorama.

Golden Gate - Story Bridge Brisbane Queensland Australia

Golden Gate - Story Bridge Brisbane Queensland Australia
Made by S@ilor
Looking down stream towards the Bay with Fishermen Island where the Great ship Mignon will arrive the next morning. The Story Bridge looks like a Golden Gate over the Brisbane River In 1926 Kangaroo Point was recommended by the Brisbane City Council's Cross River Commission.[1] Subsequently the bridge was constructed as a public works program during the Great Depression. A contract was awarded to Evans Deakin-Hornibrook Constructions Limited on 30 April 1935. The cost was to be no more than ₤1.6 million. Brisbane time-lapse video.ogv Time-lapse of Brisbane and Story Bridge Construction on the bridge began on 24 May 1935,[2] with the first sod being turned by the then Premier of Queensland, William Forgan Smith. Work sometimes continued 24 hours per day.[3] On the 28 October 1939 the gap between the two sides was closed.[2] Until it was completed the bridge was known as the Jubilee Bridge in honour of King George V. It was opened on 6 July 1940 by Sir Leslie Orme Wilson, Governor of Queensland and named for John Douglas Story, a senior and influential public servant who had advocated strongly for the bridge's construction. The design for the bridge was based heavily on that of the Jacques Cartier Bridge in Montreal, completed in 1930. The Story Bridge features prominently in the annual Riverfire display and is illuminated at night. In 1990 road traffic was halted so pedestrians could celebrate the 50th anniversary of the bridge's construction. Bridge climbs began in 2005 and are becoming a major tourist attraction.

Dingo

Dingo
Made by WilliamBullimore
From Wikipedia: The Dingo (Canis lupus dingo) is a Southeast Asian dog that has reverted to living in the wild and today mostly lives independently from humans. It originates from a small population of dogs, possibly from a single occasion during the Austronesian expansion into Southeast Asia 5,000 years ago, arriving in Australia 3,500 - 4,000 years ago. Though commonly described as an Australian wild dog, it is not restricted to Australia, nor did it originate there and is in fact a feral dog rather than a separate species. Modern dingoes are found throughout Southeast Asia, mostly in small pockets of remaining natural forest, and in mainland Australia, particularly in the north. They have features in common with both wolves and modern dogs, and are regarded as more or less unchanged descendants of an early ancestor of modern dogs. Dingoes feature prominently in the cultures of Indigenous Australians, where they are sometimes kept as pets or food, and often appear in their folklore and mythology as deceitful and malicious creatures capable of limited acts of creation through destruction. Although dingo populations flourished with the Europeans' introduction of domestic sheep and European rabbit to the Australian mainland, today they risk extinction through crossbreeding with other dog breeds. I think I've fixed the problem I was having with the View on Black. Please let me know if it's still not working. Cheers.

Electric power transmission is the bulk transfer of electrical energy, a process in the delivery of electricity to consumers. A power transmission network typically connects power plants to multiple substations near a populated area. The wiring from substations to customers is referred to as electricity distribution, following the historic business model separating the wholesale electricity transmission business from distributors who deliver the electricity to the homes. Electricity is transmitted at high voltages (110 kV or above) to reduce the energy lost in transmission. Power is usually transmitted as alternating current through overhead power lines. Underground power transmission has a higher direct cost but is useful in densely-built-up areas where it requires less land area.

Had arranged to meet up with and Andrew for a nice little walk along the Brisbane River at Kangaroo Point. We were all going a bit crazy with all the rain and not being able to go out and shoot. Decided to go out today no matter what the weather would be like. Chris had suggested Kangaroo Point as a good spot with some possibilities of some nice reflections. We were rewarded with an absolutely beautiful morning, almost completely still, some perfect reflections and some nice colours even though there weren't any clouds. ;-) Kangaroo Point is a beautiful area with walking tracks, bike tracks and even a cliff face that can be used as a rock climbing wall. No wonder a lot of Brisbanites enjoy the area in the mornings and on the weekends. Thanks for a great morning to both Chris and Andrew. 6 shot pano HDR (-1 3/4 - 0 - +1 3/4) Focal length 18mm f11 ISO100 Base 0.3 sec. blended in Photomatix and edited using Luminosity Masks.

**Yes! Explore #1 - November 20th** Taken from my front lawn (well till Wednesday when we move) in Cannon Hill, Brisbane, Australia - this was the third massive storm in 3 days that has broken rainfall records in Brisbane for the most rainfall in November since 1981. The media claims it is the worst flooding since the infamous 1974 Brisbane flood - en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1974_Brisbane_flood Once the storm passed I headed out from my safe haven on the front deck to find this amazing cloud spewing out lightning. I was out shooting a spot in the area when I saw the storm coming in the distance, so I waited and got a few shots and then rain came. I managed to get past McDs on Wynnum Road into the industrial area to put the full beam on to see where I was headed. Just as I passed Cannon Hill station the hail started and I got in the garage just as it hammered down. I must thank the neighbours for the light trails.

Riverfire - F1-11's Dump and Burn 2010

Riverfire - F1-11's Dump and Burn 2010
Made by Stupie
This year is supposedly the last time the F1-11s will be making an appearance at Brisbane's annual Riverfire Festival. With this in mind i was determined to try and capture their famous dump and burn over Brisbane. I checked the net examining previous years photos and read anything i could find on camera settings, locations and the like. The night before I expored around the Toowong Cemetery and up near Stuartholme, I found some nice vantage points amongst the tombstones in the cemetery. Not knowing if there would even be standing room I arrived 20 minutes before the big show and was much relieved to find only a handful of people waiting, and most of them like minded photographers. I set up both my main camera and my backup, did some test exposures and waited....The F1-11's didn't come from the side i was expecting( I really had no idea where they would be coming from), but I'm happy with the shot it got. I hope all the other guys on the hills got some good shots too!

Explore #147 on Monday January 5,2009 Kangaroo Point is a popular recreation spot, conveniently close to the city and the South Bank Parklands. The Kangaroo Point Cliffs, situated on the east bank of the city bend of the Brisbane River north of the Maritime Museum, opposite the Brisbane River Stage and the Queensland University of Technology at Gardens Point. The cliffs and Brisbane River Stage as seen from the QUT on the opposite bank The cliffs are a popular picnic, rock climbing and abseiling site. The steepness of the cliffs was increased by quarrying operations which mined the volcanic rock or rhyolite lava flows which form the cliffs. These lavas were deposited in the Tertiary period about 30 million years ago and filled up an ancient river valley. They currently form the banks of the Brisbane River. The Story Bridge is a prominent landmark, and provides the main means of access to the north of Brisbane. Directly under the bridge is the Storey Bridge Hotel.
