The French Huguenot community built this as a Protestant Church in 1743. On the wall is a vertical sundial with a Latin inscription, Umbra Sumus (we are shadows). Originally intended as a reference not only to the workings of the sundial, but as a reminder that our life on earth is fleeting, the inscription has come to have an added significance for this area, as waves of immigrants have arrived, thrived and then moved on. After the Huguenots, the Methodists took over the church, It became a synagogue in the 19th century and closed in the 1950s. The building has had many names as each community established its own place of worship here: It is now the Brick Lane Jamee Masjid.

.... and now a Mosque in Spitalfields, just to the east of the City of London and home to C17 migrant French Huguenots fleeing religious persecution. They brought weaving to an area which, with successive waves of migrants since has retained its rag trade connections when it was home to Jews, overcrowded in the homes of former Huguenot merchants, and more recently to people mainly from Bangladesh. www.bbc.co.uk/legacies/immig_emig/england/london/article_...

Flânerie

Best Large flânerie - definition: aimless strolling or lounging; idleness. From flâner to stroll, dawdle, ultimately from the Old Norse flana to wander about. I have a small feature on The Londonist website this week as part of their series London behind the Lens. londonist.com/2010/02/londonist_behind_the_lens_stryker66...

Brick Lane, Whitechapel is at one end of the Mile End Road and our son's University was at the other so where better to eat after spending an afternoon with him than at one of Brick Lane's numerous Indian restaurants. The local immigrant population however are not Indian but Bangladeshi and they speak Bengali, so naturally the roadsigns are in both languages. Interesting script I think.

Refurbished 21 Fournier Street E1 (completed 1725), formerly Church Street E1, Spitalfields, London. Many of these properties would have originally been occupied by weavers, first Huguenot refugees, later Irish immigrants and later still Ashkenazi Jews from the Pale of Settlement.

Just like Calderdale! France threw out the protestant Huguenots in 1685, and they brought silk weaving across rhe Channel. France's loss.
