Kaiser Wilhelm Memorial Church
Made by /\/\acropoulos
I'm taking a break from my usual nature photography this week, to post , from my trip there 3 years ago, on November 2003. Me and my wife stayed there for only 4 days but we enjoyed it very much! This is a photo of the Kaiser Wilhelm Memorial Church (in German: Kaiser-Wilhelm-Gedächtniskirche) that is located in Berlin on the Kurfürstendamm in the center of the Breitscheidplatz. The old church was built between 1891 and 1895 according to plans by Franz Schwechten. Emperor Wilhelm II ordered the construction of the church in honor of his grandfather Wilhelm I. The neo-romanesque style refers to many romanesque churches in the Rhineland. The original construction was of impressive monumentality and size. Mosaics inside the church recalled the life and work of Emperor Wilhelm I. During World War II, the church was destroyed during a bombing raid in 1943. The only remainder of the old building is the ruin of the belfry, which are also referred to as der Hohle Zahn (the hollow tooth). After the war, from 1951 to 1961, a new church was built right next to the site of the old one according to the plans of Egon Eiermann. It features a cross made of nails from the old Coventry Cathedral, destroyed by Nazi bomb attacks in Britain. It was consecrated on May 25, 1962, the same day as the new Coventry Cathedral, which like the Gedächtniskirche, was built alongside the ruins of the old building, which were kept as reminders of the horrors of war. Besides the Coventry cross, it houses an iconic cross of the Russian Orthodox Church and a graphic known as the Stalingrad Madonna by Lieutenant Kurt Reuber, created in December 1942 in Stalingrad (now Volgograd), as symbols of reconciliation between the three countries that were once at war. - Source: Wikipedia

Tischlein deck dich, Goldesel und Knüppel aus dem Sack , Fairy tale by the Grimm's brothers (Gebrüder Grimm) ------------ Shopwindow Art at KaDeWe Departmentstore in Berlin/Germany The stories collected by Jacob and Wilhelm Grimm in the early 1800s serve up life as generations of central Europeans knew it—capricious and often cruel. The Brothers Grimm (German: Die Brüder Grimm or Die Gebrüder Grimm), Jacob 1785 - 1863, and Wilhelm Grimm 1786 - 1859, were German academics who were best known for publishing collections of folk tales and fairy tales, which became popular as Grimm's Märchen. They also did academic work in linguistics, related to how the sounds in words shift over time. They are among the best-known story tellers of folk tales from Europe, and their work popularized such tales as Rumpelstiltskin, Snow White, Sleeping Beauty, Rapunzel, Cinderella, Hansel and Gretel, and The Frog Prince. A view to Gedächtniskirche from Kurfürstendamm. Gedächtniskirche is an Evangelic Lutheran church that was built in 1868 by Wilhelm II (dedicated to his grandfather Kaiser Wilhelm) in neo-romanesque style. Badly damaged in a bombing raid in 1943 and unlike other building in Berlin, was left unrestored for the people to remember the bad effect of war and its name means exactly this. Its tower used to be 113m high but after the bombing its only 64m. The present building, which consists of a church with an attached foyer and a separate belfry with an attached chapel, was built between 1959 and 1963. The damaged spire of the old church has been retained and its ground floor has been made into a memorial hall.

View On Black On november 22/23, 1943 the church received a direct hit from a wave of British bombers. The spire of the 320 foot steeple was lopped off ant the sanctuary was gutted. After the war the church remainted in ruin like so much of Berlin and was soon called the hollow tooth because of its shape. In the mid 1950's as the city solidified its polarization between east and west, communism and capitalism, the Ku'damm (short for Kurfürstendamm, Berlin Uptown) and the Kaiser Wilhelm Memorial Church became West Berlin's city center From: Berlin, the war, the wall. gedächtnis-kirche, berlin 1957-1963. architect: egon eiermann, 1904-1970. the exterior of . eiermann appears to connect the rationalism of ludwig mies and auguste perret in his steel frame and concrete panels that act as brise soleil in the office wings and as a prefabricated concrete curtain wall in the church where the coloured glass infill create the effect of a gothic window. thus eiermann combines the classical and the gothic in the church just as auguste perret had done in his. this is german romanticism holding its breath.
