Day 220/365: Mon 08 Aug 2011 - London looting... Very sad day...
Made by rubygirl22
Today, our office was informed to vacate the premises in case of riots... On the way home, all the shops were closed.... I got of the bus 5 mins from home, near the 'high' St to pick up some supplies, and all the local corner shops were closed!! A police van was parked talking to a store owner whose shop had been broken into, and all around were kids, yep, kids, with hoodies and their faces covered!! Seriously they were school age, around 12-17... Then they all re-grouped, a police van pulled up, and they attacked it!! The van took off, so the kids then broke into their local shops and ran off with handfuls of gear!!! As a Londoner for 11 years, it was a sad day! These weren't brute criminals, just the local kids, who, through social networking, organised mass disruption without a cause!!! Turning into my house, I stumbled on this young guy with a big smile on his face, packing jeans into plastic bags that he had stolen... I told him I thought it was disgusting and he should be ashamed... He tried to argue his point, but I tutted and said no joy, no need for this.... He then apologised and left... I'm a big advocate of young people, but this is not ok!! I can't help but wonder where are all the parents of these kids and why haven't they called their children home!! Shame

Minnie Lansbury memorial clock

Minnie Lansbury memorial clock
Made by helenoftheways
High on a wall on Mile End Road, London. Minnie Lansbury (1889 - 1 January 1922) was a leading suffragette and an alderman on the first Labour-led council in the Metropolitan Borough of Poplar, England. Minnie was the daughter of Jewish coal merchant Isaac Glassman and the first wife (married 1914) of Edgar Lansbury, son of George Lansbury, mayor of Poplar and later leader of the Labour Party. (After Minnie's death, Edgar married actress Moyna MacGill and became the father of Angela Lansbury, the actress.) Minnie Lansbury became a teacher, and joined the east London suffragettes in 1915. She was also chairman of the War Pensions Committee, fighting for the rights of widows, orphans and wounded from World War I. She was elected alderman on Poplar’s first Labour council in 1919, before women received Parliamentary suffrage. The clock has been restored, and is beautiful. However it always seems to say 8.40pm!

Annabelle likes Cupcakes

Annabelle likes Cupcakes
Made by Maryam Photography
On Sunday I did a shoot for my friend Annabelle Hill who is starting up a cupcake business and needed images to use on her website, on her buisness cards and for general promotion. I think we had about 30 different models which included a dog and two small children! We had a long day but I think the shoot itself was a success and I have a great range of shots from Annabelle to choose from. Above is a shot of Annabelle that I love. I have a lot of editing to do but luckily for me I have a 3 hour wait at Heathrow followed by an 8 hour flight to America to edit in so I should get a lot done even though technically I’m on holiday!

Bozo devouring his son

Bozo devouring his son

At the age of 73, and having survived two life-threatening illnesses, Goya was likely to have been concerned with his own mortality, and was increasingly embittered by the civil strife occurring in Spain. Although he initially decorated the rooms of the house with more inspiring images, in time he overpainted them all with the intense haunting pictures known today as the Black Paintings. Uncommissioned and never meant for public display, these pictures reflect his darkening mood with some intense scenes of malevolence and conflict. Original

Had a bit of a morbid week this week, discovered I had mice in the darkroom or rather not actually in the darkroom but in the space outside. Decided I'd get what on first sight appeared to be the more humane solution of sticky traps. By the time I had to murder the second mouse ceremoniously with a car battery i realized that the most humane way of dealing with mice is not to. Anyway to carry on with the sadistic vein of my week i caught a bug and tried fruitlessy to make a photogram of it for 2 days. By the time it escaped this afternoon this is the best i managed. slightly eerie isn't it

Press L for the black background... I'm in two minds on this photo... have another, but took this early this morning in the rain and wasn't sure how it would look? Have added a little bit of vibrance to the colours, and some vignetting. I know the Seagulls are out of focus, because they were moving, and I had the 200mm fully extended... but I kind of like it - I think it captures their movement in quite a beautiful way - or that could just be me... hmmmm.... we'll see I guess

Northern Outfall Sewer, Old Ford

Northern Outfall Sewer, Old Ford
Made by Fin Fahey
This is where this great engineering work crosses the Lee, and one of the few chances to see what it's really made of (you can walk along the top, via the Greenway, but of course it is invisible). At this point one can see that this vital sewer consists of four great pipes (at least at this point). Two of them appear to have been recently renewed here and have 1992 dates on, but the other two (one of which is shown here) look like the original Victorian ironwork.

Larks' tongues. Wrens' livers. Chaffinch brains. Jaguars' earlobes. Wolf nipple chips. Get 'em while they're hot. They're lovely. Dromedary pretzels, only half a denar. Tuscany fried bats. RF's were not common East of London and at Old Ford was one of the routes- the 208 and here you can see the reason for single-deckers with the multiple low bridges. RF467 passes an ornate old lighting pole on its way to Clapton Pond on 27/3/70. MBS buses took over the route in April. From my East Londons Buses book.
