97-365 It's not easy being green. Peace.
Made by greendragonflygirl
I know I look Irish, and that is my heritage, but it is my husband who is the Irishman in our family. He grew up in Belfast in the 60's and '70's, during the Troubles, a violent and bitter political/religious conflict between those who want Northern Ireland to remain part of the UK, and those who want to join politically with the rest of Ireland. There have been many Agreements and Ceasefires and things are much better now than in the '70 through the '90's but Northern Ireland remains a beautiful place scarred by bombed out buildings and walls that whole neighbourhoods of residents will never see over. The beautiful, humour-filled, generous people of Northern Ireland - most of whom were not involved, but caught in the crossfire - carry scars of suicide car bomb blasts as they walked to school, of not being able to play with certain other children, of wondering if their Da' would make it home that night. After about 10 years of progress with the Peace Process, in the last two weeks three police officers have been shot and killed by members of a dissident republican terrorist group called the Real IRA. This group fails to work within the guidelines of the carefully negotiated Peace Process. Let's hope and pray that this is not the beginning of another time of terror In Northern Ireland. There is already too much terror and civil war in the world. Peace.

Luxe

Another GORGEOUS day here in Ontario, I spent several hours at Bluffer's Park/Scarborough Bluffs, and shot about 50 pics of various ducks, geese, and swans. This particular swan was very friendly and seemed to love being photographed. I can't explain why, but for me the swan is the definition of luxury in the bird family, perhaps it's those pure white feathers, or maybe because they are just so elegant. For . Today's challenge - Luxury In case anyone is wondering about the yellow tag, Ontario’s Trumpeters are marked with yellow wing tags. In a typical year, observers report 300-360 individuals. Once a number is read and reported, the data can be entered to help track that bird’s movements, habitat use and reproductive success. Data from tagged bird sightings allows biologists to produce a genetic family tree and to record population growth and range extension. Tag sightings by observers across the southern part of the province proved useful even when the number is not recorded. Ontario observers have been asked to keep track of the proportion of marked to unmarked birds in groups observed (even if number is not read). The last four year’s analysis of reported proportions reveals a steady increase in the wild population. As the population grows, the percent of total marked birds has declined.

In the heart of the world there is a place that holds the secret names of the rocks & the trees & all the children of the earth & around it gather women & men who hold it dear & each night they stand together to keep it safe for as long as it takes till morning comes & no matter what you have been told, this will always be so, in the heart of the world. Please take a couple minutes to listen to a great song by Canadian band Moxy Früvous, wonders of the humorous danceable ballad. Not so funny this one, but oh so good. Then get up and dance with your kids or pets or neighbours to The King of Spain. BP, I'm waiting for a video!! www.youtube.com/watch?v=H2Y7HslyQXE For The Rogue Players today it's Imagine Peace, thanks to Boy_Wonder. Today is the 40th anniversary of the first Bed-In For Peace. John Lennon and Yoko Ono spent a week in 1969 sitting in bed promoting peace and protesting war. I remember that, I was in grade 1 and our teacher talked about it. My parents didn't. Also for HNF and TOTW, Story People. *****And a disclaimer from my partner in peace - he grew some hair especially for this photoshoot; he usually keeps his head clean shaven - he's a peacenik, but he's no hippie!! For MSH, July - peace and gentle.

I miss you

View Large!! Press L!! Do it do it do it! I miss you. This applies to many things lately. Mostly Summer, but also I miss a couple of my kitty cats who disappeared one day. I haven't seen them in over 2 years. I miss my grandpa, and I miss my first puppy. I LOVE this picture. I first discovered this scene last summer, I believe. It's an old, abandoned house that is half hanging off the bluff. Just goes to show how much damage erosion can do. PS. Tagged again, so here we go :) i. One of my biggest pet peeves is losing a sneeze.. ii. I miss my boat too! iii. I love lace and leopard print ♥ iv. I hate naked nails. I always have my nails painted :) v. I love beer. vi. I haven't done a photoshoot in sooo long.... I blame it on the stupid snow :( vii. The breeder of my puppy has been sending me photos of the litter, and I get SOOO very very excited every time I look at those photos :) viii. That being said, there are 2 males in the litter (I want a boy) and I just might have the hardest time choosing which one I want to take home in 6.5 weeks :( ix. 189-365 Ow, Canada
Made by greendragonflygirl
Why yes, that is a mosquito on my face. I didn't ask him to pose and he only charged me a little. Happy Canada Day to all my fellow Canucks, and to everyone who played along at Paguma's suggestion, celebrating Canada. Today is also our wedding anniversary - we wanted an extra excuse for fireworks and Canadian music. I want to take a second to rave about some Canadian faves of mine - the broad categories of literature, music, humour and travel, not to mention my appreciation for the separation of church and state. Happy 4th of July Independence Day to all my American friends celebrating and getting their weekend started early. Let the fireworks begin!! This book Hidden Canada is more than a great prop. I love reads like this, delving into obscure bits of history from sea to sea. It's like sitting around the best kitchen tables hearing great stories being handed down with all the embellishments that are added generation by generation, to make them legends and keep them alive. I could live and read in the Canadiana sections of the public library and bookstores forever and never get bored.

I don't usually talk about this stuff, but it's been overwhelming my life lately and I gotta tell you that my smiling face in my garden is just a front. I'm in my garden most days because I can't get it together to go anywhere else, it's too much effort to drive or walk somewhere or even get dressed sometimes. It hurts and it's isolating and it's getting depressing. For the first 7 years my optimistic personality kept me going, but these days, motivation is pretty hard to come by. There, I said it. I got all marked up ready for trigger point injections. Only one side is marked, but they duplicate the service on the right side too. It is kind of strange to me that I can have virtually no skin sensation, yet so much deep pain - very damaged joints and disrupted nerves. Look at that swelling, now I know why it feels like that! I didn't feel the pen marks and was surprised to see Xs. It's all done now and I expect to feel relief for at least a week and then do it again. Then I'm going to visit my mother...feel free to call me a masochist.

My heart was made for bleeding all over you
Made by Scorchez
There are days when the cage doesn't seem to open very wide at all There are others that would shock the most indiscriminate lovers of all My heart was made for bleeding all over you You got a girlfriend and I can only talk about her for so very long Then my mind turns into my heart and whispers into that dark cave that I've been wrong My heart was made for bleeding all over you And I know you're married but I've got feelings too And I still love you You moved up North, you've got a farmhouse There's cowshit in your brain and love in your heart I'm in the city and I'm trapped between two buildings and having to start at the start You've got a daughter, now you're a father You have your pack and they are wild My heart was made for bleeding all over you And I know you're married but I've got feelings too And I still love you I still love you Na na, na na na na... I've got feelings too And I still love you Yes, I still love you Martha Wainwright Bleeding All Over You

144-365 British television: pain relief on demand.
Made by greendragonflygirl
Yesterday was a really rough day at physiotherapy, although I think it was productive. I can hardly move today, so I mostly lounged about catching up on 10 episodes of my fave Brit TV soap Coronation Street, and then listening to an audiobook in my backyard lounger this afternoon. It would have been really great if I wasn't hurting so much. Tomorrow I go back to physio and do it all over again... It's really hard work, and I hate that it hurts more to try to get better, but I try to keep my eye on the long term and ultimately being able to move and live with much less pain than I have now. Pain is exhausting, and using the computer really hurts my neck and shoulder tonight, so I will see you all tomorrow. I have some good drugs and a comfy bed waiting for me now.

I love the Dickens out of him
Made by greendragonflygirl
This is part of a collection of books mostly from the very early 1900s, inherited from my grandfather. I've read every one of these books, some of them many times. Several of them, mostly books of poetry, have his thoughts written in the margins and old newspaper articles and photos tucked in as well. I absolutely adored him because he was silly and fun and taught me about plants and nature. He gave me Rachel Carson's The Sense of Wonder, the year after it was published and I was just 4 years old. I would grow into it - we grew together with it. He died when I was 12 and just getting to know about his life; these treasures have given me insight into his spirit and his dreams.

Bench LOVE
Made by greendragonflygirl
For Spread the L.O.V.E. You'll be seeing more of these LOVE letters over the next little while. I'm participating in this project that has flickr folk photographing the letters in their lives and then sending them on to other members. They've crossed borders and oceans and have lots more miles to go - and they travel with crazy glue to keep the LOVE strong. I knew I had to do a pic in my garden. There's a whole lotta love happening there - from intimate breakfasts to friend and family campfires. It's also no small treasure the good that this garden does for my heart and soul, whether I'm just puttering out there by myself or enjoying it at the window.

62-365 J is for the Joy of gardening
Made by greendragonflygirl
The Rogue Players are getting passionate today, so I'm showing you my love for gardening. 16 Random Things about me #14. In a garden, I forget about time, and worries and stress just melts away. This photo was compiled of more than 10 of my garden photos, mostly from last summer significantly rearranged and some from other gardens I visited - right now, my own garden is just dead and snowy. That's half the fun of gardening, designing, creating and re-creating. the other half is eating the fruit and veggies we grow. For February Alphabet Fun, J is for the Joy I get from gardens and gardening.

P is for puppy paws and pure love
Made by greendragonflygirl
For 7 years we have fostered puppies for Canadian Guide Dogs for the Blind. They need foster families to socialize the pups until they are old enough for formal training at about 15 months of age. This wonderful girl was doing really well with her training as a puppy, but when she went in for formal training, they realized that she has flat feet. It's hard for her to walk on some surfaces, so the Guide Dog school felt it would not be fair to put her into a career of walking for a living, so she got to come back to live with us. We love those flat feet - and she sure can swim!!

109-365 Some Sundays
Made by greendragonflygirl
are just like that. You don't make plans because it looks like this outside. Someone (me) left the car windows open a few inches yesterday when it was sunny, then it rained all night and nobody will be sitting on those seats for a few days. And you were planning to go out to take a brilliant photo for the March Madness Photo Contest that you have to post by Monday at noon. So you sulk a bit and Flickr the morning away, snuggle up and watch old movies for most of the afternoon and at 4pm realize that the sun is shining. What the hell? Where did the day go?

16 Random Things about me # 10. I paint, and occasionally draw. I like acrylics and enjoy multi-media work, lately including bits of photos along with other textural items. I've noticed that my photography and other artwork are becoming more and more entwined - I apply the contrasts and blank space, the macro images and even bokeh that I enjoy photographing to my paintings more now than I did a year ago. I just noticed this change recently, and I look forward to seeing how my brain continues to bring my eye and my heart together over time.

301 Bench Monday: Striped, scuffed shiny edition

A tribute to my favorite boots. My blundstones are from 1996 - I was going to say that they're in amazing condition considering their age, but that's a bit unconvincing. How about waterproof? They're still completely waterproof after 13 Canadian winters and almost daily dog walking and gardening wear for 6 or more months of the year. They seemed kind of expensive at the time, but if I was interested in doing the math Im sure I'd find they were the best bargain ever!!! Maybe they deserve a bit of polish - I think I owe them that.

74-365 View.. of the Endless Snow
Made by greendragonflygirl
V is for View for February Alphabet Fun, FGR What's your Angle, Buddy? and TRP Rückenfigur. I don't think the dog is really 'allowed' according that group's rules, but I gave up after several shots, between having to climb a ladder to reach my camera to focus & set the timer and waiting for the sun to come back - and hope it stayed out for 15 whole seconds. When the dog wandered into the shot that had the rest of the set-up right, I wasn't going to climb up and down that ladder again.

57-365 E is for elegance, with camera remote and my grandmother's ermine stole
Made by greendragonflygirl
I have to start running with the outtakes more often! Explored #36 Feb 5/09 SOOC, flash didn't fire. Since I didn't have to put it through PS, I didn't edit out the remote - it's the latest in elegant accessories, especially if it has a long cord attached to it. That makes me chic. I liked this better than the ones where I was actually trying....I guess I just don't have a whole ton of elegance in me - today anyway - but I had fun playing dress-up. E for February Alphabet fun

50-365 Need someone to carry those books?
Made by greendragonflygirl
16 Random Things about me#13. I don't really read the rules or instructions. I'm just like that - and if I do read instructions or other non-fiction, I read from back to front. Maybe it's because I'm a leftie. The top 2 books are recent faves, the others I refer to as needed. Today I needed them as props so I could make my pic for The Rogue Players Read Something Lately? work with Half-Nekkid Thursday. 4 challenges, I'm happy, my rules. Oh, I read magazines backwards too.
