2011: Week 7 // Lake Crabtree reflections

2011: Week 7 // Lake Crabtree reflections

Left work a little earlier on Friday to be a nice boyfriend and drive Caroline to the airport. She was headed to Boston for the weekend to celebrate a birthday, visit a new residence, and have a discussion with Samuel Adams. I brought my camera along, with hopes that I could get some nice plane takeoff/landing photos. Also, I knew I would be in no hurry to jump back on I-40 with the millions of commuters heading home to Raleigh after work. What a miserable image that is. So I had a couple of hours to spare with just my car and a camera and a beautiful Friday late afternoon. I went to the observation deck first. I stayed for a bit, and watched a mom and a dad show their kids the planes taking off and landing. I took a few photos, but I felt weird being the lone guy who's creepily taking photos of a family watching planes. So I moved on. I still didn't want to get back on the interstate, and I still had some daylight left, so I kept driving around. I ended up leaving the airport and heading down Aviation Parkway, where I found the entrance to Lake Crabtree County Park. I had half an hour before the park closed, so I drove to the end, rolled down the windows, turned up The Yardbirds, and walked around the edge of the lake with my camera. I took this photo as the sun was beginning to set behind the trees. I think Heart of Soul was playing. Not exactly the airplane shot I was hoping for, but it was my favorite one from the day. Note: Looks like these past few photos are pretty similar, both in color and composition. Maybe it's time for more color and different angles? Ok, maybe. I hear you.

It was total cacophony out there. However, I think this is what I heard. Non-reliable translation is included in parenthesis. Angry dude 1: O-ooww-oooww (You are dumber than the dumbest!) Angry dude 2: Srceee-ooowwowwooww (Shut up! You are dumb, dumber, dumbest and a downright combination of all three!) Cool dude: Wo-aa-aa ( I’m outta here!) Spectator dude: a-a-a-a-a-oo-a-a-( Mama, where are you? It is getting rough in here!) Member of the Activists for birds and wildlife

Chris with Two Heads

Chris with Two Heads
Made by ambermae
During one of the joint Lenten services that All Saints and Holy Transfiguration shared, my little friend Tabitha met Chris Capp for the first time. After he walked away, she asked me, who was that? I said, Chris. She, puzzled, asked, what kind of Chris? Me, equally puzzled, what do you mean what kind of Chris? The same kind of Chris. She, after thinking about this for a moment, but he has the wrong head. Chris Capp and Chris Gorski got a kick out of this, resulting in this picture at the Pascha picnic a couple of weeks later.

Mystical day; a Ring-billed Gull

Mystical day; a Ring-billed Gull
Made by Ramen Saha
Four 1s and two punctuations make for the first day of this brand new decade. If personified, this mystical day would be shy being new, absolutely white for rainbows of hope unite to make white, and it would fly; fly high above the wind and soar close to blue dreams. It would be ready to take on the horizon and be uninhibited by yesterday’s pain. And did I say that it could truly represent any and all of us? Happy 1.1.11 my friends! "CP" Turtle Rescue

"CP" Turtle Rescue

Linda rescued an Eastern Box Turtle recently off of Cary Parkway. It has a propensity to get hit by cars around these parts! The Eastern Box Turtle is also the state reptile of North Carolina! We found a great new home in the Black Creek Greenway next to Lake Crabtree. Check out our CP Turtle Rescue home movie (03:41 wmv).

Grasping at Shadows...

Grasping at Shadows...

Fear has a large shadow, but he himself is small - Ruth Gendler. Sometimes, we fear what we do not know, what we cannot see, unable to touch; however, it is important to realize that in the grand scheme of things it is much, much too important to be paralyzed by fears. Take that step into the shadows of the unknown. Conquer your fears and concerns. There truly is light at the other end of the tunnel. Mallard couple portrait

Mallard couple portrait
Made by Ramen Saha
What do you do when your feet are dug ankle deep in icy mud, a belted kingfisher has flown by moments ago close enough to entice you but far enough for any chances of a decent shot, and a pair of mallards swim by you maintaining an unromantic distance between them? If you are me then you recite few colorful words, pan the mallards swimming through a domestic feud at supersonic pace and end up with a shot like the one above. @maxibell photographs @photooobot and her bump while @SmithShady and @NRG Images assist with the lights. Strobist: Looks like Mike is holding an SB-600 or 800 with a grid on it, not sure, they were kinda far away. There was another SB attached to the top of the stand that Ross is holding. Maxine tripped them via Nikon CLS infrared communications. I sat back with a 10 second exposure (or so) Here is the resulting photo from Maxine.

I have studied stones and men

I have studied stones and men and found within each one a way with walls In the vuggy core of one a crystal grows as fragile as the day In the ruddy core of one a poem grows as feelings wont to draw A wall lasts until one person's words bring it down. An ant and few flowers

An ant and few flowers
Made by Ramen Saha
What stays at the end of a good field day? A pair of jeans ruined near the knees, a lot of satisfaction of some abstract kind, and memories of an ant busy on a branch exploring tiny wild flowers full of spider webs. Now, I can share the last one with you all, can I not? Please spare a minute for the ant and view large. Press L. The plant is probably Polygonum cespitosum.

Night view (via car headlights) of the spider looming outside the garage. See the closeup (previous image). Just in time for halloween! I can never remember what these are called, but they are very common in North Carolina. This was featured as the photo of the week on WUNC public radio's The State of Things web site this week..

This is actually a mixture of 2 shots. I took the sky from one shot and layered it with the lake from another. I liked the waves that were in the lake shot, and the clouds better in the other shot. I also had to brighten up the lake and logs a bit in PS. Nikon D90 Tokina 11-16mm (at 14mm) f/16 1/13 sec ISO 200 SB600 speedlight w/ dome .9 ND grad filter

Long Exposure of Lauren (10 seconds or so). Three head positions with three separate strobe pops: one from the right, once centered and one to the left (I think we ended up with two on the left side!). In retrospect, we probably could have just used two positions instead of three.

I'm really terrible with names of flowers, but these were planted near bank by Lake Crabtree. The haze blocking the sun gave great natural light today and the colors came out great with the new D5100.
