After stopping at Big Lava Bed, I tried to take the national forest roads north through the Dark Divide between Mt St Helens and Mt Adams. I'd heard the way might still be blocked by snow, but I tried anyway, hoping it would be passable. This is where I had to stop, on Forest Service Road 60, a few miles west of Goose Lake. My plans dashed, I ended up taking the long (very long) way home, east through Trout Lake, Goldendale, Yakima, White Pass, and the Stevens Canyon / Paradise road along the south edge of Mt Rainier. Very pretty places, some I'd never seen. But way too much driving! Roads blocked by snow in June, sheesh!

Another view of Big Lava Bed, Gifford Pinchot National Forest. There's a big hole in the lava on the right side. To the left the rough ground falls off steeply. It's a hard place to hike around in. There are no trails.
