Changing staffs at Berry, south coast NSW. Berry is the last attended location in NSW where electric staff is in use for the sections on both sides, and I think it may also be the last such location in Australia. Thus, it is the only location where station employees still regularly hand exchange staffs with the crews of passing trains. This was once a common activity on many, if not most, Australian single track main lines (and something I have done countless times in my career). For anyone who doesn't know, I will try and explain electric staff working in a few paragraphs! It is a token system for single lines. On single lines there are crossing locations with two or more tracks, where opposing trains can 'cross' or pass each other. Between crossing locations there is only one track (single line), and the purpose of token working is to ensure that there is only one train at a time on that section of track. In token working the driver of a train must be in possession of the correct token for the single line section. The token is inscribed with the names of the locations at each end of the section to identify it. The token gives the authority for a train to occupy that single line section, and it must be carried on the train while it is in that section. In electric staff working, the token is rod shaped and called a staff, and there are a number of staffs for each section. The staffs are normally held within a pair of staff instruments, one at each end of the section. The instruments are electrically connected, and when a staff is withdrawn from one of the instruments, they both become locked and no more staffs can be withdrawn. When that staff is returned to either instrument, both instruments become free and another staff can then be withdrawn. This ensures that only one staff can be out of the pair of instruments at any one time, and so only one train can carry the staff and be authorised to enter the section at any time. Phew!

This was taken at the Berry garden show. The owner of this Ford Model T told me that he was the fourth owner of this motor car. It was in fantastic condition! Another interesting note about this particular car was that most of the car was actually made in the Holden factory in Melbourne. During this time Holden would not have been making cars themselves but supplying bodies to other manufacturers. Apparently demand for the Model T was so high that Ford had to outsource the manufacture of the components to other companies. If you look closely, you can see the words Made in Canada above the grill. About the Ford Model T The Model T was a motor car produced between 1908 - 1927. It was built by Ford and is considered the first affordable motor car. The Model T was named the most influential car of the twentieth century . This is how Henry Ford's vision for the T: I will build a car for the great multitude. It will be large enough for the family, but small enough for the individual to run and care for. It will be constructed of the best materials, by the best men to be hired, after the simplest designs that modern engineering can devise. But it will be so low in price that no man making a good salary will be unable to own one—and enjoy with his family the blessing of hours of pleasure in God's great open spaces.

Last Sunday, 6 May 2007, we were in Berry, a town about an hour's drive south from where we live. It is a quaint town that used to be rural and quiet nineteen years ago when I arrived in Australia. Now it has become touristy and sometimes noisy like on this particular Sunday which happened to be market day. It remains steadfastly charming and colourful; somehow it retains a rustic air. The shops burst with colour, gardens likewise. Restaurants beckon and cater to all tastes from your trusty doughnut to gourmet meals at the Wood fired Sourdough Bakery and Restaurant. Don't forget your camera. Did I say it is also photographers' paradise? If you wish to see a slide show of Berry go to www.youtube.com/watch?v=z-Rf-CXIG4M

This was a once common sight in NSW. Old passenger carriages were converted into vans to accommodate workers, especially in remote areas. However, Berry on the Illawarra line is just 140 kms from Sydney. These two vans are comparatively modern, dating from the 1890's, and were photographed in December 1975.

I'm not to sure they had UHF or TV's back in 1884! This is a interesting pub to photograph, so much happening with hubcaps adorning a few walls. Lifeboats on the roof, a plastic kangaroo with it's bum sticking in the air. A huge post with signs pointing different directions and distance to places of interest.

On the way to Booderee National Park we saw several of these signs on bus stops along the Prince's Highway near Nowra. I couldn't resist :-) A reject for 365 Days Day 3.120, but only by a narrow margin.
