Berlaymont - monument to Robert Schuman

Berlaymont - monument to Robert Schuman

Here in Europe we have a lot to be grateful for thanks to Robert Schuman. As a Luxembourger of Franco-Germanic parents, he served the German side in a civilian capacity in the first war and the French side in a government capacity in the second. He refused to co-operate with the invading Nazi forces and was almost sent to Dachau; he escaped custody and became an active member of the Resistance. These experiences, combined with his mixed ancestry (although never mixed loyalties), led him to conclude that Europe's best hope post-1945 was for it to unite so tightly that war would become impossible. He created the Council of Europe as a forum for the war-ravaged countries of the continent to talk rather than fight, then followed this with the ground breaking idea of getting ancient enemies France and Germany to pool their war-making materials (iron and coal at the time). The resulting European Coal and Steel Community, made up of France, West Germany, Luxembourg, The Netherlands, Belgium and Italy became the bedrock of what would become the Common Market/European Economic Community, the European Community and finally the European Union. This small monument stands outside the headquarters of the European Commission but, to paraphrase Wren, if you want a memorial to Schuman, look around you.

Reflections of tax-payers money

Reflections of tax-payers money

The Berlaymont building is an important governmental building in Brussels, Belgium. It houses the European Commission headquarters. The building was built from 1963 to 1969 and became the symbol of the European presence in Brussels. In 1991 they decided that a complete renovation was necessary and that asbestos protecting the steel structure had to be removed. The refurbishment lasted over a decade, and met with considerable criticism. The project was projected to be complete by 1997 but was delayed until 2004. Expenditure on the renovation was budgeted at £66 million but the final cost incurred is estimated at over £1 billion. So that's where all our money goes ... When it was finished they discovered that the building could house only 2,000 of the 20,000 Commission civil servants. So that's why they are still building in the area ...

Berlaymont bulding, Brussels, Belgium Architect: Lucien de Vestel The star shaped Berlaymont building houses the European Commission, the executive branch of the European Union. The building is called 'Berlaymonster' or Death Star by eurokrats (bureaucrats of the EU). It was constructed on the site of a 300-year old monastery between 1963 and 1969 in the Leopold Quartier. Asbestos was found in the structure in 1993 which had to be removed. The work lasted 13 years, significantly longer than the construction itself. On weekdays the surroundings are full of euroworkers and well dressed politicians.

The Berlaymont, the building where the European Commissioners and their staff have their offices. This building was under a huge plastic sheet for a decade while people took each other to court and defaulted on contracts and generally pissed each other off. Now it stands there, huge and enigmatic and anonymous, towering over the Council building on the other side of the Rond-Point Schumann. This said continuous to me because of the rows and rows of tiny rectangles going on around that curve, and because of the feeling that the more things change in the Commission, the more they stay the same.

Sunset Reflection in Brussels (HDR - 9 Exposures)

Sunset Reflection in Brussels (HDR - 9 Exposures)
Made by www.bazpics.com
Made from 9 images shot in Brussels last night as sunset kicked in. The reflection comes from the camera sitting close to the top surface of black marble which is on top of a section of low wall outside of the main European Commission building. The sunset doesn't half make the image, the colours in the sky last night were perfect, I couldn't have asked for any better. Also the inclusion of the tower crane I felt was necessary too, as at present the city seems to be in major overhaul mode with building & renovation work going on all over the city. Thanks for your comments as always.

The Berlaymont, opened in 1967 as the original headquarters of the European Commission. The building had to be vacated in the 1990s because of structural defects. It was completely renovated over a period of 12 years and is now in full use again. The huge modern buildings of the EU Quarter now dominate a large area in the east of Brussels, though some original streets, buildings and recreational facilities remain. One of the original streets can be seen through the building in this photo (see the note). 28 March 2011 SLR_105-0154
