Upper Belvedere - South Facade

Upper Belvedere - South Facade

Schloss Belvedere, Vienna, Austria And now something totally different... I didn't like the shots I took during my stay in Vienna until I started playing around with them. It was a gloomy, cold and windy day with overcast skies. This shot and the following two are HDRs of three hand-held exposures, merged and tone-mapped in Photomatix, I then applied the Midnight Sepia action in PS7 and... now it looks even more gloomy. The Belvedere is a baroque palace complex built by Prince Eugene of Savoy in the 3rd district of Vienna, south-east of the city center. After buying the plot of land in 1697, Prince Eugene had a large park created. The Schloss Belvedere began as a suburban entertainment villa: in 1714 work began to erect what is now called the Lower Belvedere, not as a palace but as a garden villa. In 1720-1723, the Upper Belvedere was built, originally intended simply to provide a suitable end to the main garden axis, but the palace was soon enlarged to provide the main summer residence of Prince Eugene. The complex was sold in 1752 to Maria Theresa by the prince's heiress. Maria Theresa first named the Schloss Belvedere. Explore/Interestingness: Highest position: #368 on Thursday, February 8, 2007

Belvedere

Belvedere
Made by Vlad Bezden
The extensive Belvedere complex consists of two magnificent Baroque palaces the Upper and Lower Belvedere, the Orangery, and the Palace Stables. The buildings are set in a stunning Baroque park landscape in the 3rd district of Vienna, south-east of the city centre. It houses the Belvedere museum. The grounds are set on a gentle gradient and include decorative tiered fountains and cascades, Baroque sculptures, and majestic wrought iron gates. The Baroque palace complex was built as a summer residence for Prince Eugene of Savoy. The Belvedere was built during a period of much construction in Vienna, which at the time was both the imperial capital and home to the ruling dynasty. Many of the city's most opulent edifices date from this era. The buildings commissioned by Prince Eugene, in particular the Belvedere, number among them. This period of prosperity followed on from the commander-in-chief Prince Eugene of Savoy's successful conclusion of a series of wars against the Ottoman Empire. The crushing defeat of the Turkish army under his leadership at Senta in 1697, and the ensuing Treaty of Karlowitz that was signed in 1699 under favorable terms to Austria finally brought to an end the conflict with the Ottoman Empire that had been raging since 1683. from Wikipedia source

I'm too lazy to add an original description to this classic front-shot... taken from www.belvedere.at/jart/prj3/belvedere/main.jart?rel=en&... In 1717, the decision was made to build the Upper Belvedere. Construction took place between 1721 and 1722 and the interior decoration was completed the following year. The garden palace primarily served the purpose of pomp and display. This is reflected in the elegant sala terrena (today the entrance hall), the grand staircase, the magnificent Marble Hall, rooms sumptuously embellished with stucco and frescos (frescos by Carlo Carlone [1686-1775], ceiling paintings by Giacomo del Pò) and the chapel with the exquisite altarpiece by Francesco Solimena (1657-1747). Weather conditions were simply perfect, no need to adjust levels, saturation or contrast. Shot in june 2007.

The first day was quite overcast and it rained quite heavily in the afternoon. But the weather was simply amazing during rest of the vacation.

(Explore 2010 Aug 3, # 422) Tag 321: Schloss Belvedere. Day 321: Palace of Belvedere. Sometimes I like to walk a few steps through the Botanical Garden and the park of the palace of Belvedere in its neighbourhood. Today was once again such a day. By the way the palace is called Belvedere because from there you have an amazing overview to the subjacent City of Vienna.

Whenever I think of the sphinx, I think of these statues in the grounds of the Upper Belvedere, rather than the one in Egypt – somehow these renditions capture the concept perfectly for me. I think the Belvedere's sphinxes are all different; the one on the left is my favourite. If a larger-than-life lioness with an eagle's wings and a human head really existed, I think this'd be her usual facial expression – there's something alluringly ambiguous about her heavy-lidded, appraising gaze. Better ?

The Belvedere looked quiet and peaceful now. Yet, it was once a resident of the person -- whose assassination plunged the world to the 1st world war. Archduke Franz Ferdinand of Austria's assassination in 1914 in Sarajevo caused Austria-Hungary's allies and Serbia's allies declared war to each other -- starting the first world war. The Belvedere is now mostly a museum, with original works of Vincent Van Gogh and Claude Monet among others, on display. The Belvedere Vienna, Austria

Couldn't resist -- had to tweak this one into a sixtyish hippiesque multi colored dream version of itself. (No drugs involved!) Amazing what one can find inside the RAW data. Sure could work out as a coming tourist attraction for Vienna. (Hey -- might even play a techno waltz there....)

My oh my -- my brain was freezing. Very cold -- very windy. Yet I couldn't resist this. The water was moved by the wind. Clouds in a blue sky. To get the most out of it I combined two different versions of the same RAW (one for building and sky, one for the water) -- hope you like it.
