Hey, thanks all for the comments and faves on this photo. A little background. I recently spent 2 days up in Seattle visiting with Getty Images. While I had meetings during the day, at night and in the early morning I ran around all over Seattle shooting. This particular photo was taken near an elevator and stairway that went from the area around Pike Place Market down to the waterfront. I actually wasn't waiting for this shot. I saw this woman runner running and had to sprint after her to chase her with my camera (and backpack). I'm glad she didn't turn around because she probably would have mistaken me for a stalker or something. Anyways, right before this bridge to the stairs/elevator is the freeway that runs along the waterfront in Seattle. So she is running beneath this freeway, which is where the light on her is coming from. It's from a light in the underpass. She's running towards the bridge and even more dramatically, and out of view, towards the ocean. The sun had just come up. I had already been shooting for a few hours in the dark and just lucked into this glorious capture of someone beginning their day. I saw her running and just thought what an amazing way to start a day. The air is clean and fresh in Seattle, it was crisp and cold, and her run just represented all that is good about morning to me. I shoot strangers a lot. I love it when they can't see me and I can capture a moment in life as a hidden observer.

Couldn't sleep one evening so I pulled out the camera and tripod and started shooting out of the window of my new apartment. I thought it might be a good time to see how correcting a mistake I've been making on my D80 might make a night HDR shot come out. It's not the best or most dramatic, but I like how it turned out. Definitely more contrast when I look at it now as opposed to when I composed this together on my laptop. Looks pretty damn spiffy . For the nerds, this is processed from 3 brackets exposures at ±2.0EV in .NEF RAW format. What's presented here is a low-compression JPEG from the TIF that Photomatix output. In more layman's terms, this is processed from three identically shot photos at different shutter speeds. They're combined to get the best lighting from all three.

The Sedgwick James Building, sometimes known as Fourth & Blanchard, and affectionately known as the Darth Vader Building. It is a 25-story high-rise office building built in 1979 and located in the Denny Regrade neighborhood of downtown Seattle. Designed by Chester Lindsey, the architect famous for designing Seattle's tallest building, the Columbia Center, was born in Yakima, Washington on January 18, 1927 and died of cancer August 16, 2003. My (current) apartment is on the 21st floor and faces south. As such, it has decent view of south downtown. I've been experimenting with various night photographs for the past few days. This one was taken at 9.02 pm (PDT) on the 21st of August 2004.
